Shady forests and sunny, open mountain slopes define Fröhnd. Historic buildings, themed trails, cycling routes and winter activities showcase different sides of the community—from local history to active days outdoors.

Nine districts in a varied landscape

Fröhnd comprises nine districts: Hof, Ittenschwand, Kastel, Unterkastel, Ober- and Niederhepschingen, Künaberg, Stutz and Holz. They lie at elevations between 400 and 1,200 metres. The different district names also feature in the local sights and activities: many of the destinations described are named after their district.

Buildings and traces of local history

The Kastler Bridge is an arch bridge over the Wiese River in the district of Unterkastel. It was built in 1908/09 and renovated in 1981. In Ittenschwand stands a chapel built in 1767, with a Rococo altar depicting Mater Dolorosa. The Klopfsäge is in the district of Holz: built in 1808, it is a listed monument. The bridge, altar and sawmill offer contrasting glimpses of architecture, religious art and the history of craftsmanship.

Another historical trace is the tunnel between Niederhepschingen and Unterkastel. Sections of the former railway line were developed as a cycling and hiking trail in the 1970s. The railway route complements the buildings with a different perspective on local history.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The Hirtenpfad and Urwaldpfad are Fröhnd’s two themed trails. Mountain bikers can choose from numerous routes along wide forest roads and narrow trails. E-bike tours follow a different route: an asphalted high-altitude trail leads towards Pfaffenberg; for the return journey, you can take the Wiesental Cycle Path towards the Upper Wiesental Valley. The cycling options therefore differ in factors including surface and direction.

Cross-country ski trails and a lift in winter

The Hörnerspur is a 25.9-kilometre high-altitude cross-country ski trail with an elevation gain of 818 metres. It starts at Tannenboden between the districts of Hof and Ittenschwand. The short, easy Tannenbodenloipe also starts there and is designed for practising classical technique and skating. Both trails share the same starting point but differ considerably in length and purpose: one is geared towards practice, while the other is a longer high-altitude trail with specified route measurements.

In the district of Hof, the Hornlift offers skiing and snowboarding in winter. It is 1,000 metres long and has an elevation difference of 300 metres. Together with the two cross-country ski trails, it provides a clear comparison for planning winter activities: practice trail, high-altitude trail and lift each offer a different kind of activity.

Farm tours and local products

The Leopoldhof in Fröhnd offers farm tours and sells its own products directly from the farm. A visit therefore combines two different offerings: a tour of the farm and direct sales of its produce. This adds an insight into farm life to the trails, buildings and winter sports options.
