Schwörstadt: Water, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Schwörstadt
Schwörstadt brings together water, hiking trails and a long history. The outdoor swimming pool is right on the Rhine; the marked trail network includes woodland sections and viewpoints, while Heidenstein, the castle and churches provide historical landmarks.
Outdoor Swimming Pool and Hiking Trails
The outdoor swimming pool on the Rhine is right beside the river and has a large sunbathing lawn. The facilities include swimming and non-swimming areas, as well as a paddling area for young children. If you plan to visit the pool, check its operating status and access in advance; the pool layout may change during renovations.
Schwörstadt’s hiking trail network connects with the Rhine and the Dinkelberg and includes woodland sections and viewpoints. This offers a different focus from the outdoor swimming pool: the trails are all about woodland and views, while the pool offers swimming areas and a sunbathing lawn. These different interests can help you plan when choosing accommodation.
A cross-border hiking trail over the Ryburg-Schwörstadt power station opened in summer 2000. The crossing is open year-round to pedestrians and cyclists; check for possible temporary operational restrictions before travelling. This makes it possible to combine the hiking trail with a crossing intended for both people travelling on foot and cyclists.
In the wider Schwörstadt area, the concession area of the Ryburg-Schwörstadt power station includes 13.5-kilometre stretches of riverbank on each side of the Rhine. The riverside landscapes provide recreational space for hikers, anglers and people interested in nature. This broader view of the riverside landscape complements the specific landmarks along the hiking trail network.
Heidenstein, the Castle and Church History
Heidenstein was added to the register of listed monuments in 1951 as a cultural monument of particular significance. The site was redesigned with explanatory panels in 1995/96. The present-day castle in Schwörstadt was built in 1834. The town’s history therefore focuses both on the designation of Heidenstein and on a specific date for the castle’s construction.
The parish of St. Clemens in Schwörstadt is recorded for the year 1246; in 1247, a priest of the Church of St. Pelagius in the district of Dossenbach is mentioned. The former parish church in Schwörstadt was demolished in 1849/52 and replaced by a new building at a different location. A new Protestant church in Dossenbach was completed in 1855. The early church references and the 19th-century building events provide different historical points of reference.
