The Ahorn Forest, covering around 2,000 hectares, gave the municipality of Ahorn its name. Located in the Main-Tauber district between the Lovely Tauber Valley and the Odenwald, the forest area can be explored on cycling and hiking trails and walking routes.

Trails with varied landscapes

The “Around the Ahorn Forest” cycling route starts and ends at the town hall in Eubigheim. The same place is therefore both its starting point and destination. For those who prefer to travel on foot, the LT 19 “Green Spelt and Orchards” hike offers a different route description: it crosses a stream, passes colourful fields and continues towards Berolzheim.

Cycling also offers its own distinctive landscape: near Eubigheim, the Adventure Tour 8 “Green Spelt Cycle Route” follows the valley of the Eubigheimer Bach for several kilometres. When choosing a route, different features therefore take centre stage—a stream crossing and fields on the hike, and a stretch through a river valley on the cycling tour.

For an overview of the wider district, the Main-Tauber district cycling map lists 18 circular and point-to-point routes, ranging from 24 to 240 kilometres. These include the five-star cycling route “The Classic,” the Tauber Valley Cycle Route, the Wine Cycle Tour and the Main-Tauber-Franconian Cycle Eight. Check the route details before setting out if you plan to ride one of these tours.

Summer days at the outdoor pool

The family-friendly outdoor swimming pool in Ahorn welcomes visitors in summer. If swimming is part of your travel plans, it offers a seasonal activity alongside the forest and trails. Check the opening times in advance for your planned visit.

Places of interest in Ahorn

The former Bettendorfsche Castle in Ahorn was built in 1566 and extensively restored in 2009. Today it houses the municipal administration and is considered a cultural monument of particular importance. Its construction history, later restoration and current use give the site a tangible connection to the past.

Other places of interest in the municipality of Ahorn include the local history museum in Berolzheim and the Refugium with its oriental garden in Schillingstadt. Together with the castle, these sites showcase different aspects of Ahorn’s cultural heritage. You can choose where to focus based on whether you are interested in local history, a museum or a garden.

Culture and fine food in the Main-Tauber district

Those who venture beyond Ahorn will find further cultural attractions in the Main-Tauber district. Bronnbach Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery. Wine tastings can be booked at its Taubertal Vinothek, where more than 20 winegrowers and wineries present selected wines from Baden, WĂĽrttemberg and Franconia.

The Bronnbach Cultural Tours programme includes concerts, readings, exhibitions, wine and food events, as well as lectures. This means the wider destination offers culture and wine alongside trails and landscapes. These varied events provide a different focus from the nature and cycling tours around Ahorn.

Another cultural highlight is the Teutonic Order Castle in Bad Mergentheim. Today, around 3,000 square metres of the castle are home to a museum covering the 800-year history of the Teutonic Order and the history of the town. It also houses the Mörike Cabinet, a collection of doll’s houses, the Adelsheim Antiquities Collection and an exhibition about the Neolithic period in the Tauber Valley.
