Freudenberg offers architectural history, castle trails and waterside experiences: the town hall is a multi-storey half-timbered building dating from 1499, while Seepark and the natural lake each add their own touch to a stay. When planning a trip with children, you can first choose your preferred focus – culture, trails or water. This choice can also help structure your search for accommodation for the trip.

Town Hall, Chapel and Castle

Freudenberg’s historic town hall was built in 1499 as a multi-storey half-timbered building. Today it houses the town museum. A visit to the museum is subject to the town hall’s opening hours; check them before planning your visit. The LT 1 circular hiking trail also starts at the town hall and leads up to Freudenburg Castle via steps and the castle path.

The cemetery chapel also tells of the town’s earlier history. It is dedicated to Saint Lawrence and was the church of the settlement of Lulingeseit. The settlement was first mentioned in a document in 1159. Since 1987, the Freudenburg Castle Festival has been staged every two years at the castle. Check the specific performance dates before travelling. Another cultural venue is the Amtshaus Gallery, which holds changing exhibitions three times a year.

Water and outdoor trails

Seepark Freudenberg includes a swimming lake with a water surface of around two hectares and a sunbathing lawn of around 2.5 hectares. Seasonal operations may vary. Another waterside spot is a natural lake of around 17 hectares, used for fishing and, in part, surfing. This means there are different waterside activities to choose from – swimming at Seepark, and fishing and, in part, surfing at the natural lake.

Below the Main promenade, before the bridge, there is a free mooring for small boats of all kinds. Check local conditions before using it. Together with the lakes, the mooring offers another way to enjoy time by the water, though the same activities are not available at every location.

Compare hiking and cycling

There are several options for hiking: the LT 1 leads from the town hall up to Freudenburg Castle via steps and the castle path. Numerous long-distance and circular hiking trails run through Freudenberg’s municipal forest. The Liebliches Taubertal Panorama Trail crosses the Liebliches Taubertal and the adjoining Maintal in five stages, between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Freudenberg am Main; Freudenberg can be the starting or finishing point. The trails therefore differ in format, from a specific route to the castle to a multi-stage trail through two valleys.

Cycling routes also vary in character. The second stage of the Sportive route runs from Freudenberg to KĂĽlsheim along hilly paved farm roads and finely gravelled, shady forest tracks. From Freudenberg, the Main Cycle Route offers a flat ride along the river; BĂĽrgstadt and Miltenberg are easy to reach via this route. You can choose your route based, among other things, on whether you prefer a hilly stage with varied surfaces or a flat ride by the river.

A regional extra in the Main-Tauber district

In the wider Main-Tauber district destination, wine tastings can be booked at the Vinothek Taubertal in Bronnbach Monastery. More than 20 winegrowers and wineries present selected wines from Baden, Württemberg and Franconia there. This regional cultural and culinary experience adds another option for planning a trip in the Main-Tauber district to Freudenberg’s own attractions.
