Boxberg: Lake, Wine and Architectural History
Accommodation in Boxberg
Boxberg combines waterside activities with architectural history and wine tradition. The lake area features a lake, a wet meadow and numerous footpaths, as well as a viewing pavilion and a wooden jetty across the lake. In the districts, churches, a Renaissance castle and events provide other highlights.
Lake Area, Story Trail and Outdoor Swimming Pool
Boxberg’s lake area comprises a lake with lakeside planting and a wet meadow. Numerous footpaths, a viewing pavilion and a wooden jetty across the lake complete the area. Here, you can enjoy time by the water in different ways and take in the surroundings on foot or from a viewing point.
Another idea for a day out is the Mama Muh story trail in Boxberg Nature and Adventure Park. It is freely accessible and can be visited during the day. If you would like to include the trail in your plans, check the details on site. The Umpfertalbad outdoor swimming pool is open seasonally. Its facilities include a 25 × 12-metre swimming pool with 1-metre and 3-metre diving platforms, a 25 × 8-metre non-swimmer pool with a slide, and a toddlers’ pool. Check the current seasonal dates before your trip.
Churches, Castle and Wine Tradition
The former fortified church in Boxberg’s Angeltürn district contains six early Gothic wall frescoes in the choir’s window niches. Wölchingen is home to the Frankendom, a mighty Late Romanesque church also known as the “Cathedral of Baden’s Franconian region.” The two buildings have different points of interest: in Angeltürn, the frescoes inside the church take centre stage, while in Wölchingen it is the Late Romanesque church and its traditional nickname.
The Renaissance moated castle of Unterschüpf is located in Boxberg’s Unterschüpf district and is used mainly as a school for children with speech and language difficulties. It complements the churches with a different type of building and a different present-day use. The history of viticulture also shapes the way we see Unterschüpf in the Schüpfer Grund: winegrowing and wine trading defined the area for centuries. After major vineyard land consolidation and the construction of a frost-protection sprinkler system in the early 1970s, winegrowing resumed in the two villages.
Festivals and Cycling in Schweigern
The “Schüpfer Wine Festival” takes place annually on the last weekend in August. Boxberg also holds an annual pumpkin festival with a market in September. Both events offer a specific reason to plan your travel dates around local festivities; check this year’s details before making plans.
In the Schweigern district, the Schweigern Pavilion has a viewing platform overlooking Schweigern and the surrounding countryside. The pavilion can be hired for private events through the Schweigern Beautification Association. If you want to make a cycling trip the focus of your visit, the GrĂĽnkernland cycle route has clearly defined starting and finishing points: it begins and ends at the railway underpass in Schweigern.
More Things to Do in the Main-Tauber District
The wider destination of the Main-Tauber district also offers wine- and culture-related activities. Wine tastings can be booked at the Taubertal wine shop in Bronnbach Monastery, where more than 20 winegrowers and wineries present selected wines from Baden, Württemberg and Franconia. The Bronnbach cultural programme includes concerts, readings, exhibitions, wine and culinary events, as well as talks. These regional themes complement Boxberg’s experiences and offer another perspective on the Main-Tauber district.
This gives you different options for timing your trip: festivals take place on the dates listed, while the Umpfertalbad is open seasonally. If a particular event or the outdoor swimming pool is central to your stay, check the latest event or seasonal information in advance.
