Discover Mannheim: Rivers, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Mannheim
Mannheim is located where the Rhine and Neckar rivers converge. The Water Tower, Baroque Palace, museums and Reißinsel each add a different note, spanning architecture, technology, art and nature. This makes it easy to shape your stay around your own interests, combining urban impressions with a landscape of Rhine floodplains.
Architecture, Art and City Life
At Friedrichsplatz, the Water Tower, gardens, water basins, the adjacent festival hall and the Kunsthalle form an ensemble considered one of Germany’s finest Art Nouveau complexes. Mannheim Baroque Palace also sets a standard of its own: its façade is 440 metres long, making the palace one of the largest in Europe. Together, the two sites showcase different facets of Mannheim’s architecture.
The Kunsthalle Mannheim collection spans German Romanticism, French and German Impressionism, Expressionism, New Objectivity and contemporary art. STADT.WAND.KUNST offers a different way to experience art: the project turns public spaces in Mannheim into a freely accessible museum of urban art. A map shows the works created in Mannheim so far as part of the project; it includes works through August 2026.
The Hauptmarkt is a weekly market in central Mannheim. The Old Town Hall, the fountain monument and the historic market square provide its setting. As market details can change, check the latest information before your visit.
Discover Technology and City History
The TECHNOSEUM explores 200 years of technological and social history. Demonstrations, interactive stations and hands-on insights into optics, mechanics and electrical engineering offer a range of ways to engage with these subjects.
The exhibits include the historic 1896 “Eschenau” tender locomotive. Several times a day, it runs under steam, sounding its steam whistle as it travels from the museum station to the outdoor grounds. The locomotive brings a historic machine to life, offering a different perspective from the insights into optics, mechanics and electrical engineering.
Mannheim city tours and sightseeing rides visit historic locations and reveal the history and present-day character of this diverse city on the Rhine and Neckar. The Karl Drais Tour follows the route Karl Drais took on 12 June 1817 on his legendary “two-wheeled running machine”, visiting historic sites in and around Mannheim. Festivals also shape the city’s cultural offering: events such as Enjoy Jazz, Time Warp and Maifeld Derby take place in Mannheim, attracting people from across Europe.
Rhine Floodplains and Green Spaces
Reißinsel is one of the last naturally occurring Rhine floodplains in the Upper Rhine region. It is accessible from 1 July to the end of February; a signposted circular trail starts at the “Kuckucksinsel” entrance. Also observe any temporary notices issued by the nature conservation authority.
A large park stretches along the Rhine at the level of Mannheim’s Lindenhof district, with riverside promenades, extensive sunbathing lawns and old floodplain woodland. The area is designated a landscape conservation area. For another perspective, visit the new park centre in Luisenpark, with its penguin enclosure, South America House, large aviary and underwater world themed “Around the World in 80 Steps”.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Interests
When looking for accommodation in Mannheim, first consider what you want your stay to focus on: architecture, collections and technology, urban art and market life, or Reißinsel and the riverside landscape. If you would like to combine several of these themes, base your choice on the aspects that matter most to your trip.
