Friedrichsfeld combines church and local history with railway tradition; nearby, the Dossenwald forest offers a place to enjoy nature and outdoor activities. The churches reflect different architectural styles and periods, while the forest has nature trails, circular hiking routes, running trails and other activities. You can tailor your stay to your interests, balancing culture with time outdoors.

Churches, architectural styles and a long span of history

The Johannes Calvin Church in Friedrichsfeld was built between 1900 and 1902 in the Romanesque Revival style, based on plans by Hermann Behagel. Its name is unusual: it is the only church in Germany named after John Calvin. This makes it a useful point of interest for anyone interested in church architecture and religious history.

Another historical date is 1687, when French Reformed Huguenot families who settled in Friedrichsfeld built a church there. Together with the dates of the later churches, this spans the period from the late 17th to the early 20th century.

St. Boniface Church offers a different architectural accent. This single-nave Gothic Revival church has a tower and was consecrated on September 26, 1899. Inside is the so-called “Saint Anne Trinity statue.” It is considered the church’s oldest work of art and dates from around 1500. Thus, the information about St. Boniface brings together two distinct dates: the church’s consecration and the approximate date of the artwork.

The town center also gives this history a geographical focus: the area around Vogesenstraße and Neudorfstraße in central Friedrichsfeld forms the district’s historic center.

Railway history from different perspectives

A historic locomotive, the E 244 31, documents an important step in the development toward the drive systems used in modern rail vehicles, with its three-phase current drive. Another side of railway history is preserved by a railway postal carriage: it bears the operating number 51 80 00 - 33021 - 8, today D-HEMeV 56 80 90 - 40 021-5, and recalls the era of railway mail in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, which ended in 1997. These two artefacts draw attention to different topics—the development of drive systems and the history of railway mail services.

Nature and outdoor activities in the Dossenwald

There is also a forest nature trail, a bird-watching trail, circular hiking routes and a network of bridleways. Runners can choose between two routes of five and ten kilometres; the area also has four forest playgrounds. These offer a variety of activities: wildlife enclosures and nature trails, hiking paths, and designated running routes.
