Kraichgau, the Odenwald, the Rhine Plain and the Southern Bergstraße meet in Nußloch. The municipal area ranges from 103 to 317 m above sea level; its varied soil conditions shape a diverse landscape. This gives a stay several different dimensions: you can explore trails through the landscape, learn about the municipal forest or discover Nußloch’s local history.

Landscape and Municipal Forest

Nußloch’s municipal forest covers around 350 hectares and has been managed in a natural way for several decades. A large part lies within the Bergstraße-Süd Landscape Protection Area and is designated as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat area. Beeches shape the species-rich forest, alongside oaks, ash, maples, lindens, elms, larches, spruces and Douglas firs. Wild service trees, service trees and walnut trees also grow there, and the ground vegetation includes rare orchids.

Those interested in nature and outdoor activities will find numerous well-maintained trails and paths throughout the municipal area, leading to scenic and historically interesting places. The upland area, in particular, with its extensive forests, is ideal for varied hikes. The forest is not only part of the landscape, but also a subject to explore in greater depth on the forest nature trail.

Nature Trails on a Range of Topics

The Nußloch Discovery Trail offers insights into the formation of limestone, its extraction today and the creation of valuable natural oases through restoration after quarrying. Geology, human use and changes to the landscape are all connected here. The trail is especially suited to visitors who like to combine time outdoors with learning about the landscape.

The approximately three-kilometre-long orchard nature trail explores a different subject. It passes through scenic parts of the municipal area, and 32 information boards introduce visitors to fruit tree varieties. Nußloch’s local fruit-growing history includes the exceptionally sweet honey plum, which occurs in pure wild form within the municipal area. In the past, plums were used in many ways: for baking, cooking and also in liquid form. The trail and this traditional use offer two different ways to discover Nußloch’s landscape and local traditions.

Forest and Bird Nature Trails

The forest nature trail starts at the Weiße Hohl car park. Its route follows Wieslocher Weg, Blockhüttenweg, Neuer Weg and Maisbacher Fußweg before returning to the starting point. Along the way, visitors can learn about numerous tree species and discover more about Nußloch’s municipal forest. The trail complements the hiking routes with a closer look at the forest.

The bird nature trail also returns to the starting point, but follows Wieslocher Weg, Amerikanerweg, Tannengartenweg and Neuer Weg. Both route descriptions include Wieslocher Weg and Neuer Weg, but differ in their other sections. When choosing between the two routes, you can take their respective itineraries into account; the forest nature trail also offers the described information about tree species and the municipal forest.

Local History and Finding Accommodation

Objects on display at Nußloch Local History Museum invite visitors to discover the lived history of the town. The museum is at Fahrweg 3, a few minutes’ walk from Lindenplatz. A museum visit can therefore provide a cultural-history experience alongside the nature trails and hiking routes.

Nußloch also participates in the intermunicipal Leimbachroute leisure and tourism route; the Heidelberg-Mannheim Municipal Association is the project coordinator. Start your search for accommodation in Nußloch by considering the experiences you want to shape your stay.
