Oftersheim combines a cycling route through the town with a nearby protected area and a tangible link to its Roman past. You can therefore plan your stay around different interests: cycling, nature and local history each offer a distinct starting point.

Cycling the Leimbach Route

The 46-kilometre Leimbach Route runs through Oftersheim. Its full route leads from Sinsheim in the Kraichgau region via Wiesloch, Leimen, Oftersheim and Schwetzingen to BrĂĽhl on the Rhine. Oftersheim is therefore part of a longer connection linking several towns. The route is well signposted and invites cyclists to discover the Leimbach and points of interest along the way.

When planning, bear in mind that 46 kilometres is the length of the entire route, not just the section in Oftersheim. You can first consider which section or daily distance suits your trip. Check current route conditions before setting off.

Dunes and woodland as distinct nature themes

The Oftersheim Dunes Nature and Landscape Protection Area lies southeast of Oftersheim. It adds a distinct landscape theme to the town, and the protected area should not be confused with the course of the Leimbach Route. If you are weighing up nature and cycling for your trip, these offer two different points of interest.

The Schwetzinger Hardt also offers another perspective on the region’s landscape. Oftersheim is one of the municipalities involved in the Schwetzinger Hardt. The aim there is to promote and develop nature conservation, recreational use and sustainable forestry in harmony. This places the area’s natural features in a broader context without presenting the dunes and cycling route as one combined excursion destination.

Roman history in Oftersheim

In the Hornungsäcker field, remains of a Roman villa, a villa rustica, were excavated in the 1960s. This gives the town’s history a tangible Roman connection alongside today’s themes of cycling and landscape. If you are interested in different historical periods, you can include the excavation as a historical point of reference in your travel plans; it is distinct from the landscape and route themes described above.

More interests in the Rhein-Neckar district

The wider Rhein-Neckar district offers other distinct themes to explore. For cultural history, consider the Electoral Palatinate’s Schwetzingen Palace, with its Rococo theatre and world-famous gardens. In Ladenburg, large parts of the historic town centre still reflect the Middle Ages and, in places, the Roman period. In Wiesloch, sections of the former town wall and defensive towers have been preserved. Schwetzingen also combines culture with a long culinary tradition: asparagus has been grown there for around 350 years.

The Rhein-Neckar district also offers a wide range of nature and outdoor activities. The Bergstraße and the eastern part of the district lie within the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park. The annual “Ab in den Wald” programme offers free guided walks and excursions in woodland throughout the district. Eberbach has 150 kilometres of marked hiking trails. At Waidsee in Weinheim, there are areas for paddlers, sailors and windsurfers; at the St. Leon-Rot swimming lake, water skiing and wakeboarding are available on a cable system.

There are also destinations for other interests: the Hockenheimring is a draw for motorsport fans, and the Technik Museum Sinsheim displays the Concorde. Guided tours are offered at the ruins of Windeck Castle in Weinheim. These examples offer their own points of interest and complement the themes more closely related to Oftersheim, rather than setting out a fixed itinerary.

This distinction can help you choose a place to stay that fits your travel plans.
