Schönwald in the Black Forest: Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Schönwald in the Black Forest
Among meadows, quiet lakes, streams and dark green forests, Schönwald in the Black Forest offers a diverse hiking landscape. Nearly 60 kilometres of hiking trails, certified therapeutic-climate trails, a raised bog and historic craft traditions offer a variety of highlights. Winter sports and mountain biking are also among the activities that make the area appealing to visitors with different interests.
Hiking Trails and Therapeutic Climate
Nearly 60 kilometres of hiking trails offer plenty of scope for exploring the landscape on foot. Possible tour themes include discovery tours to the sources of the Danube, Elz and Gutach rivers. Schönwald also has certified therapeutic-climate hiking trails. The Heilklima-Steig is designated as a premium hiking trail as part of the Hochschwarzwald Genusswege. Route lengths and trail conditions may change; check the current route and conditions before setting out.
There are also suitable routes among the selected hiking trails for visitors with pushchairs or using wheelchairs: some have gentle gradients and surfaces suited to these needs. This suitability does not apply to all trails. Check the condition of the surfaces before your hike.
The Blindensee Raised Bog
Alongside heather, bilberry and bog bilberry, up to 20 species of sphagnum moss grow in the Blindensee raised bog. This adds a distinctive natural highlight to the hiking trails through meadows and forests and alongside quiet lakes and streams. The plants you can see vary with the season.
Reinertonishof and Local Crafts
Reinertonishof is a cultural monument showcasing regional crafts and rural life in the Black Forest in past centuries. Reinertonishof includes a family-run smokehouse dating from 1619 and a farm distillery. The farm inn serves house-smoked Black Forest ham and other regional specialities. The offerings also include pony rides, carriage rides and a playground. Access, programme and dining options may change; check what is available before your visit.
The cuckoo-clock tradition is also alive in the area: clockmakers and woodcarvers still make handmade cuckoo clocks, which can be bought locally. Alongside insights into rural life in past centuries, visitors can discover contemporary crafts and regional products.
Winter Sports with Different Highlights
The cross-country trail network covers more than 40 kilometres and is groomed for classic and skating styles. In addition, the Rothaus cross-country skiing centre has a 2.5-kilometre biathlon trail that runs through the Weißenbachtal valley. Trail grooming and access are seasonal. The ski lifts have different features: Dobel ski lift is family-friendly, while Rössle ski lift is considered more challenging and is located in the Weißenbachtal valley. Operating schedules and slope conditions depend on the season.
