Discover Niedereschach: Eschach Valley, Roman history and art
Accommodation in Niedereschach
Niedereschach lies in the Eschach Valley on the eastern edge of the Black Forest, at an elevation of 620 to 720 metres. It is situated between Villingen-Schwenningen, Rottweil and Schramberg. Its character reflects a blend of landscapes, traces of Roman and Alemannic history, art at the town hall and outdoor activities.
Landscape of the Eschach Valley
Niedereschach is one of the municipalities primarily affected by the Eschach Valley FFH area. Together with its location on the eastern edge of the Black Forest and its elevation, this gives you a clear geographical reference for your stay. Its connection to the protected area also adds a nature conservation perspective to the landscape.
From early finds to Roman times
The first documented mention of Niedereschach dates back to 1086. Finds in Bubenholz date from even earlier: Alemannic graves and Roman artefacts point to a settlement history predating that first mention. This places a firm date from the town’s history alongside evidence from earlier times.
In Fischbach, a Roman estate offers a glimpse into life 2,000 years ago. The open-air site of the Roman bath is open year-round. A Roman room in the local history museum in Fischbach displays finds from the Roman bath and Roman villa. Those interested in history can explore it in different ways: the estate offers a glimpse into life in Roman times, the Roman bath is an open-air site, and the museum displays archaeological finds.
Art and masks at the town hall
The town hall features both temporary and permanent exhibitions. Changing art exhibitions are held on all three floors throughout the year. In the basement, a permanent exhibition displays masks, larval masks and Schemen from the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet carnival and the Tyrolean region. The town hall mask exhibition is open during town hall opening hours, so plan your visit accordingly.
Niedereschach offers a choice of different cultural themes: art that changes throughout the year and a permanent exhibition dedicated to Fasnet masks. Together with the historic sites in Fischbach, these give a varied picture of local history and culture.
Cycling routes, guided rides and water
For active days, interconnected cycling routes link the districts. Guided rides are offered by the Viktoria 1910 Niedereschach cycling club. The birdwatching trail starts at the Kulturfabrik car park. This gives you some specific options if you would like to combine your stay with a bike ride or an outdoor walk.
At Teufensee, non-motorised watercraft may be used in accordance with municipal regulations. The relevant regulation was amended with effect from 30 June 2022. Use is therefore subject to local rules and expressly limited to non-motorised watercraft.
When looking for accommodation, you could start by considering which experiences you would like to focus on during your stay: local history and exhibitions, or cycling routes and activities on the water. You can then assess the location of accommodation based on the places and themes that matter most to your travel plans.
