Discover Kernen in the Rems Valley: Marble Run, Climbing Garden and Wine
Accommodation in Kernen in the Rems Valley
There are various reasons to stay in Kernen in the Rems Valley: the Ducal Marble Run gets you moving, Stetten offers climbing and wine experiences, and you can even encounter art in a vending machine. When planning your visit, it is worth considering what kind of outing you are looking for: a clearly defined experience, a seasonal event or a longer route through the wine country.
Outdoor activities around Kernen and Stetten
The Ducal Marble Run in Kernen is more than 800 metres long and follows a route of around 1.5 kilometres. These figures describe two different measurements: the length of the run and the distance covered along the path. This distinction helps you plan your day without confusing the two numbers.
Thanks to its sheltered location, the Stetten climbing garden is open for climbing almost all year round. The climbing garden of the Remstal district group of the German Alpine Club (DAV) is located above Stetten, surrounded by woodland and vineyards. Alongside the marble run, you can therefore choose climbing spots with their own distinctive landscape setting.
Art and wine in Stetten
The KUNSTvollAUTOMAT vending machine on St.-Pierre-Platz in the centre of Kernen-Stetten sells small works of art. These include drawings, paintings, word art, photographs and small sculptures. The selection thus ranges from visual art to literary works and small objects.
During the summer and late summer months, Y-Burg provides the setting for the annual Culinary Wine Trail, small-scale theatre performances and traditional wine tastings hosted by the Stetten winegrowers. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, this seasonal programme brings wine and stage performances together.
At the KuKuK art market “Kuck Mal”, KuKuK artists and non-members can display and sell their work. The event also includes an artistic stage programme and food and drink. If you are planning a special trip to the market, check the dates in advance.
Routes through the wine country
The Remstal Cycle Route starts at Endersbach station in Weinstadt, follows a loop through the wine country via Kernen and Fellbach to Remseck am Neckar, and is around 106 kilometres long in the wider Rems-Murr district destination. Kernen is therefore part of a longer cycling route that connects several towns.
Another way to experience the region is the 50-kilometre Rems-Murr Hiking Trail in the Rems-Murr district. It can be hiked in three stages, from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. The entire trail is well served by local public transport, so you do not need a car to get there. You can download the route navigation to a smartphone.
The Limesbus Nord is another option in the Rems-Murr district for hiking to UNESCO World Heritage Limes sites or joining a tour led by Limes Cicerones. The seasonal route 372 runs from May until the second-to-last Sunday in October, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from Murrhardt via Grab and Großerlach to Mainhardt and back. Check the current operating days before travelling.
Culture and food and drink in the Rems-Murr district
The Rems-Murr district offers a variety of cultural activities beyond Kernen. In Murrhardt, a night watchman tells stories and legends by torchlight; children can bring lanterns. Historical tours in Backnang follow in the footsteps of the margraves to St. Pancratius Collegiate Church, where the Margraves of Baden are buried.
In Fellbach, the winegrowers at Neue Kelter offer wine tastings, cellar tours and a snack. The annual Weintreff at Alte Kelter is a tasting where numerous wine producers and other food and drink artisans from the Remstal-Stuttgart region present their products. For tours and tastings, it is advisable to check dates locally in advance.
