Tübingen Between Half-Timbered Houses, Museums and the Botanical Garden
Accommodation in Tübingen
Tübingen offers a wide range of things to discover: a protected half-timbered old town, museums, traditional wooden boats on the Neckar and a Botanical Garden with almost 10,000 plant species. When planning your trip, consider whether you want to focus mainly on urban history and culture, the garden, or other attractions in the district of Tübingen.
Old Town, Museums and Literary History
Tübingen’s old town is a protected historic ensemble with numerous significant individual monuments. Half-timbered houses, romantic squares and winding lanes define its character; the old town contains 350 cultural monuments in total. This means a stroll through the city takes in architectural landmarks and notable places close together, while its historical themes extend beyond any single era.
The City Museum is housed in the former Kornhaus in Tübingen’s old town. It presents changing exhibitions on the city’s history and current urban development, as well as two permanent exhibitions: one on the city’s history and the other on the silhouette artist Lotte Reiniger. Regular events and museum education programs for children and young people round out the program. Anyone who wants to get to know the city not only through its buildings and lanes, but also through its stories, will find a different perspective here.
The Hölderlin Tower is another literary landmark: it is one of the most significant sites in literary history. Together with the City Museum’s exhibitions, it offers a different perspective on Tübingen than a walk through the protected old town.
Botanical Garden: Collections and Walking Route
The University of Tübingen’s Botanical Garden covers ten hectares and is home to almost 10,000 plant species from around the world. Its collections are organized by geographical, ecological and taxonomic criteria. A herb garden, a farmer’s garden and flower beds featuring showy perennials add areas with their own themes. The garden therefore offers different ways of looking at plants, from their origins and habitats to selected garden areas.
A walking route of about 0.75 kilometers follows wide, step-free paths. Bus routes 5, 13 and 17 serve the garden; if you plan to take the bus, check the route before setting off. The manageable length of the walk and the garden’s thematic variety make it a good standalone activity rather than something to equate with a museum visit.
Neckar Traditions and Getting Your Bearings in the City
Punt boats are traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats that have plied the Neckar in Tübingen for centuries. They represent the city’s longstanding connection with the river. The public guided tour of the old town offers a different perspective: it takes in the main sights of the historic old town and provides detailed explanations of the city’s history. If you want to plan your stay, these two themes offer different points of interest—river traditions and a guided historical overview.

More Attractions in the District of Tübingen
The district of Tübingen also offers a distinctive natural setting. It stretches between the Schönbuch Nature Park, with its many forests and valleys, in the north and the edge of the Swabian Alb in the south. The Neckar, Ammer and Steinlach rivers have cut through the region’s cuesta landscape, creating a varied area. The scenery also includes the wooded areas of Rammert and Schönbuch Nature Park, high plateaus with sweeping views, orchards and vineyards. These regional landscape features complement the more urban themes of Tübingen’s old town and museums.
In the district of Tübingen, guided tours in Bebenhausen explore Cistercian monastery architecture and the daily lives of the monks and the royal couple. The interior of Bebenhausen Palace can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Meanwhile, the Keltermuseum in Unterjesingen displays an extensive collection of tools and objects from wine and hop growing, as well as from farming and household life since the 19th century. These examples offer different focuses: monastery architecture and everyday life on the one hand, and the history of work and agriculture on the other.
