Nehren: Half-Timbered Village in the Orchard Paradise
Accommodation in Nehren
Nehren is a half-timbered village in the Swabian Orchard Paradise. In the historic village center, protected as a heritage site, charming half-timbered houses shape the streetscape; St. Vitus Church also provides a distinctive landmark. Since its half-timbering was exposed in 1980, the tower has once again been visible from far away and is considered a landmark of Nehren. Here, you can experience two different sides of the village: the half-timbered houses in the center and the architecture of a single religious building.
Half-Timbered Architecture and St. Vitus Church
The late Gothic St. Vitus Church was built in 1430. Its architectural design includes a choir closed on three sides, a nave hall of the same width, and a side bell tower on the north side of the choir. This arrangement gives you specific details to look for as you view the building: the choir, hall, and tower are different parts of the same church. The tower’s exposed half-timbering connects its silhouette, visible from far away, with a distinctive architectural feature.
The heritage-protected village center complements the church with its half-timbered houses. Getting to know Nehren through its buildings lets you move between the late Gothic church and the streetscape of charming houses. Both perspectives draw your attention to different scales: the layout of a single building on the one hand, and the character of an entire village center on the other.
Orchard Tour and Wood-Fired Bread
The orchard tour offers another perspective. It leads through Nehren and past traditional orchards, cider presses, distilleries, and farm shops, bringing the subject of orchards to life at close range. While St. Vitus Church places a single historic building at the center, the tour focuses on the orchard landscape and the different types of stops along the way.
Baking wood-fired bread yourself is another activity on offer: interested visitors can join in at the wood-fired oven in Nehren’s Bürgerhaus after registering. Registration is required. Confirm availability in advance with NEHREN AKTIV.
A Tour with a Literary Destination
The children’s literature tour has been running since 2013 and takes visitors in Nehren to Hans Vaihinger. It includes collectible sticker No. 4, available at the town hall, Klett Schokolade, and Nehrener Hof. If you would like to include the tour or sticker in your travel plans, check locally before your visit to see whether the materials are available at the locations listed.
TĂĽbingen as the Wider Context
The wider travel destination of Tübingen offers a different landscape setting. Tübingen district stretches between the forested, valley-rich Schönbuch Nature Park to the north and the Alb escarpment to the south. Its landscape includes the wooded areas of Rammert and Schönbuch, high plateaus with expansive views, traditional orchards, and vineyards. The Neckar, Ammer, and Steinlach rivers have cut through the district’s cuesta landscape, creating a varied area.
Tübingen’s museums offer a different focus from Nehren’s village center, too. The Museum of Ancient Cultures at Hohentübingen Castle is the only university museum in the world with exhibits from two UNESCO World Heritage inscriptions. It displays figurative artworks dating back 40,000 years, as well as the oldest musical instruments. In this way, Nehren’s late Gothic St. Vitus Church and Tübingen’s much older art collection represent different cultural themes within the wider travel destination.
