Discover Mühlheim on the Danube
Accommodation in Mühlheim on the Danube
Mühlheim on the Danube brings together caves, historic buildings, local traditions, and routes for cycling and hiking. Mühlheim Cave, the Upper Town, and the International Danube Cycle Path each offer a very different experience. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on nature, local history, or outdoor activity.
Caves and rocky landscapes
Mühlheim Cave formed in the Lower Mass Limestone of the Upper Jurassic. Ladders and bridges make 93 metres of the cave accessible. Its features include sinter pools, large stalactite columns, and numerous thin stalactites hanging from the ceiling. These geological formations make a visit to the cave a distinct experience, quite different from a tour of the historic Upper Town.
Mühlheim Rock Cave is also part of the area’s natural attractions: it lies within the Buchhalde-Upper Danube Valley nature reserve and has been one of the Swabian Alb Geopark’s geopoints since 2022. It traditionally opens for the annual Cave Day in the Danube Valley. Check the date and access arrangements for the relevant year before planning your visit.
The Upper Town and its history
The historic character of Mühlheim’s Upper Town has been preserved since the 14th century. Circular routes through the Upper Town and the town’s districts introduce visitors to historic buildings and sights. They offer a way to explore local history without making any single attraction the focus of your visit. Another striking historical landmark is the Maria Hilf church ruins on Welschenberg, the remains of a Baroque pilgrimage church.
Frescoes dating from the 9th century were discovered in the former parish church of St. Gallus in the cemetery grounds. The complex, comprising St. Gallus Church, St. Vitus Chapel, and the Mount of Olives, is considered an important historical and art-historical centre for Mühlheim and the surrounding area. The frescoes point to the town’s long history.
The former Mühlheim railway station building is another cultural meeting place. It houses a puppet theatre and, in the former waiting room, the TheaterBahnhof cabaret stage. The Bachmann-Légrand family presents its own productions and guest performances there. Check the current programme separately if you would like to plan a theatre visit.
Fasnet, walks, and events
Mühlheim is considered a stronghold of Alemannic Fasnet carnival. The fools’ tree is erected on Shrove Thursday. The traditional Thomasmarkt market, held on the third Saturday in October, is also part of the annual calendar. Check the details for the relevant year before planning your trip.
Night-watchman tours pass through Mühlheim’s historic Upper Town: they take place on Saturdays at 9 p.m., and additionally on Mondays at 9 p.m. from May to October. The meeting point is at the town hall. As the seasonal schedule may change, check the details before your visit. This makes it easy to distinguish scheduled events from independent explorations of the town.
Cycling and hiking
The International Danube Cycle Path passes directly through Mühlheim on the Danube and can also be ridden in short stages. This makes room for a shorter bike ride, rather than viewing the route only as a long-distance trail. The Bergsteig Trail offers a different perspective: this nature-oriented circular route leads from Mühlheim to the Maria Hilf church ruins on Welschenberg and passes through Bergsteig near Fridingen.
Nearby, the Kraftstein Loop runs through the Ursental Valley. It has been certified as a DonauWelle Premium Hiking Trail since 2014 and passes the ruins of Kraftstein and Wallenburg, as well as the remains of Altrietheim and Bräunisburg. The Danube Cycle Path stage and the Kraftstein Loop offer two different perspectives: one by bike, the other on foot through the Ursental Valley.
More places to visit and finding accommodation
A playground with a slide, swings, and climbing frame is located right next to Mühlheim Bike Park. Check the details of the facilities before visiting, as they may change. Mühlheim’s indoor swimming pool has a 20 × 8-metre swimming pool; ask the operator for current visitor information.
