Buchloe can be explored in different ways: at the local history museum and St. Stephen’s Church, along the paths in the city forest, or as part of the wider travel destination of Ostallgäu. When choosing your stay, you can consider whether local history, outdoor activities or a broader regional experience should take centre stage.

Local History Museum: Town History and the Railway

Buchloe’s local history museum brings together the town’s history and the history of the railway. The exhibition features items relating to Buchloe’s history, as well as models and original objects relating to the history of the railway in Buchloe. The museum also offers a six-part audio guide in which the radio group at Buchloe Grammar School presents treasures from the collection. The exhibits and audio contributions provide different ways to explore the exhibition’s two themes.

The local history museum is open on the first Sunday of every month from 2 to 5 pm. Special and group tours are available on request. Check the current opening hours before your visit. If you would like a guided tour, it cannot simply be assumed to be available: tours are offered on request.

City Forest Trails and Hiking Options

Buchloe City Forest has several specially marked circular routes for hiking, Nordic walking and jogging. One route described in detail is the Large City Forest Circular Trail: marked with a red dot in both directions, it extends beyond the city forest to the districts of Honsolgen and Hausen. The markings and the two possible directions help you find your way around this route.

Another hiking option is to follow the Ostallgäu Hiking Trail from Buchloe to its end in Marktoberdorf. Alongside the circular trails in the city forest, you can therefore choose a route with a named destination outside Buchloe.

Church, Farmers’ Market and Advent Season

St. Stephen’s Church is the oldest church in Buchloe. A parish priest of St. Stephen’s is documented as early as 1299 and 1311. The history of St. Stephen’s Church therefore dates back to the late 13th century.

The farmers’ market is part of the weekly routine: it takes place every Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon at Immleplatz. The Christkindlmarkt takes place on the second weekend of Advent, running from Friday to Sunday; the venue is the church car park. If you are planning your stay specifically around the Christkindlmarkt, check the exact event dates in advance. This way, you can plan for a regular market visit or an Advent-season visit as separate reasons for your trip.

Getting Here and Choosing a Location

Buchloe is located on the A 96 motorway between Munich and Lindau and has two junctions. From Buchloe’s motorway junctions, direct road connections lead via the B 12 towards Kempten and the Allgäu, and via the B 17 towards Augsburg. These directions provide a practical guide when planning your road trip to Buchloe. Together with the local attractions, they can help you decide on the focus of your stay: culture in town, activities in the city forest or hiking trails that connect with other places.

Ostallgäu as the Wider Destination

The wider travel destination of Ostallgäu offers a greater choice of cycling routes. The district is home to a cycling region certified by the German Cyclists’ Federation (ADFC). Its regional routes extend throughout Ostallgäu, are each 25 to 76 kilometres long, are signposted throughout and each have their own theme. The “Schlossparkradrunde im Allgäu” quality cycling route has been awarded five stars by the ADFC. When planning, you can therefore choose between local circular routes and regional cycling options.
