Lindenberg i.Allgäu combines Waldsee with hat-making history and distinctive buildings in the townscape. At the lake, the focus is on activity and nature; in town, it is on museums, historic places and culture. If you are looking for accommodation, consider which of these themes you want to shape your days—or whether a mix would appeal to you.

Waldsee and trails with different focuses

In the Waldsee recreational area, you can swim, jog, hike and cycle. The lake is 765 metres above sea level; the town of Lindenberg describes it as Germany’s highest moorland bathing lake. Seasonal conditions may play a role, especially if you are planning a day of swimming.

Two route descriptions highlight different features: the Lindenberg Trilogy Walk follows the shore of Waldsee and ends back at the starting and welcome point at the German Hat Museum. The “Around Lindenberg” hiking trail passes the paths at the level of the Bergfriedhof cemetery; from there, you can enjoy a view of the Nagelfluh mountain range. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between a loop connected to the lake and a route with views of the mountain range.

Hat-making history and the townscape

Public guided tours of the permanent exhibition at the German Hat Museum take place at 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month. Check the museum for current operational details before your visit. A small picture exhibition on the history of the tower is housed in the Nadenberg observation tower. It was built in 1911 under the name “Siebenländerblick.”

Lindenberg’s townscape also tells the story of different chapters in its history. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul is considered a landmark of the town; its imposing domed towers define the townscape. The old cemetery at the Aurelius Church is now a cemetery park and a small oasis with a long history in the heart of the town. The church and cemetery park thus offer their own reasons to explore the local heritage.

Weekly market and indoor swimming pool

The Lindenberg weekly market, offering fresh, local produce, takes place every Saturday morning in the town square by the town hall. If you are planning a visit to the market, check in advance whether it is currently taking place.

The Lindenberg indoor swimming pool has a 25-metre pool with five lanes, a non-swimmer pool and a children’s area. It also has a textile steam bath and an AquaCross facility. Check current operating details before your visit.

These different themes provide concrete pointers to help you tailor your search to your travel plans.

More to explore in the wider Lindau destination

The wider Lindau destination offers other distinct attractions. On Lindau Island, the New Lighthouse is 33 metres high, with 139 steps leading to the top. Also on the island is the Diebsturm, built in 1380, which long formed the western end of the town’s fortifications. These buildings offer two different perspectives on Lindau: the view from the lighthouse and the history of the fortified town.

Landscape and art also shape the wider Lindau destination. In the Eistobel nature reserve, the waters of the Upper Argen plunge down over several waterfalls along a 3-kilometre hiking trail. The sculpture trail in Maierhöfen is an approximately 5-kilometre circular route featuring 17 sculptures and 12 text panels. The 17 sculptures and 12 text panels were created by artists at a symposium and left to Maierhöfen as a permanent exhibition. If you would like to include nature or art in your travel plans, you will find yet more themes here than in Lindenberg’s town and lakeside offerings.
