Nonnenhorn: Wine Traditions, Village History and Lakeside Experiences
Accommodation in Nonnenhorn
Nonnenhorn combines experiences on Lake Constance with a local history shaped by wine and fruit growing. Pedal boats, motorboats and kayaks are available to hire at the landing stage. If you prefer to get around on two wheels, you can also start the Panorama Cycle Route on Lake Constance near Lindau here. It is 21.7 kilometres long. Nonnenhorn offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: on the water, by bike, on foot or on a tour exploring the village’s history.
Water, the cycle route and paths through the village
The Genussweg, or “Gourmet Trail,” is around 3 kilometres long and runs through the fertile Lake Constance landscape. Information boards explain the main apple and grape varieties, as well as the art of fruit and wine growing. The village walking tour is a good complement: it leads to historic sights, lovingly tended front gardens and tranquil spots amid the wine village’s preserved rural character. The two circular routes offer different perspectives: one focuses on fruit and wine growing in the landscape, the other on the village’s streets and squares.
The lengths of the Genussweg and the cycle route make it easy to distinguish between a walk and a bike ride when planning your day: around 3 kilometres on foot compared with 21.7 kilometres on the Panorama Cycle Route. Which option best suits your stay depends on how you want to divide your time between exercise, local history and excursions on the lake.
Crafts, village history and tradition
The village museum brings the history of Nonnenhorn’s craftspeople, fruit growers and winegrowers to life. It is housed in a farmhouse that is 300 to 400 years old. Old winemaking equipment, a cooper’s workshop and parts of a locksmith’s workshop sit alongside the old farmhouse parlour and bedroom. Traditional crafts and rural life are thus brought together in the same historic building.
The Schäfflertanz is also part of local tradition: it came to Nonnenhorn in 1846 and has traditionally taken place there every seven years. If you would like to plan your stay around this special tradition, check the performance dates in advance.
Another historic landmark is St. James’s Chapel. The Bavarian-Swabian Way of St. James ends at this historic chapel in Nonnenhorn. From there, pilgrims traditionally cross Lake Constance by boat to Rorschach in Switzerland, continuing their journey along the Via Jacobi. The chapel, pilgrimage route and traditional onward crossing form an interconnected part of the village’s history.
Winegrowing and regional food
The old wine press in Nonnenhorn dates back to 1591 and is considered one of the oldest wine presses in the Lake Constance region. In the 2026 programme, visitors can learn how grapes were processed in the past at the historic wine press from 1 April to 24 June and from 7 to 28 October. The programme also offers insights into the history of wine and fruit growing in Nonnenhorn and includes a wine tasting for a contribution of 3 euros towards costs. Check the dates before visiting.
The Weinhof Hornstein in Nonnenhorn is home to a Rädlewirtschaft, a traditional wine tavern serving its own wine and hearty snacks. The wine press reflects the long history of winegrowing, while the Weinhof brings wine and food together. This makes it possible to discover local winegrowing both through its history and through the region’s food culture.
