Ansbach brings together the history of the margraves’ court with garden design, music and special insights into the city’s traditions. The Margrave Museum, the Residence and guided city tours each focus on different aspects of the past; the Court Garden and the Aquella leisure pool offer a different perspective. When planning your trip, it may therefore help to first consider whether you would like to explore collections and architecture, combine a guided tour with regional cuisine, or also set aside time for leisure and the broader travel destination of Ansbach.

Margrave History and Garden Design

The Margrave Museum presents the history of the city and the Principality of Ansbach. Alongside collections on the Margrave era, it also has a section on Kaspar Hauser; both areas are accessible to visitors with disabilities. In Ansbach Residence, the Gothic Hall displays the “Adolf Bayer Collection of Ansbach Ceramics”: it includes the largest collection of faience and porcelain from the former Ansbach manufactory. Highlights of the Residence also include a ceiling fresco by Carlo Carlone in the Great Hall and the Picture Gallery, a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections.

The design of the Court Garden also reflects changing tastes: from 1724, it was redesigned in the Baroque style and later transformed into an English landscape garden. Today, features from both eras come together there. The Ansbach Orangery was built in the early 18th century, inspired by French examples. Its architect, Carl Friedrich von Zocha, modelled the north side on the colonnades of the Louvre and the south side on the Grand Trianon at Versailles. The cityscape thus brings together different influences from European garden and architectural design.

Music, Guided Tours and Ansbach Cuisine

Founded in 1947, Ansbach Bach Week is one of the most important festivals for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his era. During Bach Week, Ansbach becomes an international meeting place for Baroque music, musical discoveries and contemporary concert culture. The Ansbach Rococo Festival offers a different historical focus: splendid costumes, Baroque music, historic dances and theatrical scenes bring to life the splendour of the margraves’ court and the era of the “Wild Margrave,” Carl Wilhelm Friedrich of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The Orangery provides the setting.

The “Getting to Know Ansbach” city tour includes the former court church of St. Gumbertus, with exclusive views into the Swan Knight Chapel and the princely crypt, as well as the synagogue and the late-medieval Beringershof. The Ansbach Bratwurst Tour explores the origins and making of bratwurst and the city’s innkeeping tradition. A tasting follows a 60-minute city tour: the bratwurst is served grilled or as “Blaue Zipfel,” seasoned with salt, pepper, marjoram and allspice. Check the latest dates for these tours before your trip.

For information about the city’s history and the guided tours on offer, you can contact the Ansbach Tourist Information Office. It is located in the Stadthaus in the heart of the old town, at Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Platz. This provides a specific place in the old town where you can get oriented on these topics.

Leisure and Other Regional Perspectives

As a complement to culture and city history, the Aquella leisure pool in Ansbach offers a wave pool, a current channel, swimming and children’s pools, and a 73-metre-long slide year-round. This adds a water-based leisure option to the museum, garden and guided-tour offerings. Check current operating details before your visit.

The broader travel destination of Ansbach also offers other ideas. The Franconia Literary Trail is a 2.2 km accessible circular route around the town fortifications of Wolframs-Eschenbach. Its 15 information panels focus on authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works explore Franconia. The trail thus combines a walk with literary themes from different centuries.

The Frankenhöhe Nature Park offers a landscape-focused perspective. It covers around 1,100 km² and lies within the districts of Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. Given its landscape, it is particularly well suited to relaxation; information is also available on hiking and cycling trails, as well as ranger-led tours. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you want your trip to focus on Ansbach’s city history and culture or also include offerings across the broader travel destination of Ansbach.
