Weigendorf offers a range of things to explore: a Kneipp footbath with a rest area and loungers, the highly visible dolomite rock “Alter Fritz,” a landmark of Haunritz, and the Erzweg, whose circular route passes through Weigendorf on its way back to Hartmannshof. Each offers its own highlights—taking a break, enjoying the landscape or following the route—so you can decide which experiences will shape your stay.

Kneipp footbath, rock and Erzweg

The Kneipp footbath in Weigendorf combines a footbath with a rest area and loungers. If you plan to visit, check its current condition beforehand. This lets you consider it as a possible break without letting it take up your whole day.

Another local landmark is the “Alter Fritz”: this highly visible dolomite rock is the landmark of Haunritz.

The Erzweg adds a route to these local attractions. Its circular route passes through Weigendorf on its way back to Hartmannshof. For your planning, it offers a different perspective from the rest area or landmark: the focus here is on the village as part of a tour.

Hiking landscapes in the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination

The Amberg-Sulzbacher Land is in Bavaria, between Regensburg and Nuremberg. Its landscape includes imposing limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and charming river valleys. This means hikes can showcase a variety of landscapes; the following examples are part of the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination and should not be confused with Weigendorf’s local attractions.

The Felsenweg is a 2.7-kilometre hike from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher and across an impressive rocky landscape. The estimated walking time is about 45 minutes. The Wacholderwanderweg is considered one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land. The region thus offers both a precisely measured hike with dramatic rock scenery and another trail highlighted for visitors.

The Erzweg also has regional cultural and natural significance: it links sites with a mining tradition spanning more than 1,000 years and passes through cultural and natural landscapes. At Kultur-Schloss Theuern, the East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum researches and documents the mining and industry of eastern Bavaria, keeping their history alive. The regional route and the museum, with its focus on mining and industry, thus offer two different ways to explore the past.

More regional experiences and traditions

The wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination also offers a variety of nature and outdoor activities. You can canoe on the Vils from Hahnbach; the route passes unmodified stretches of river, castles and historic Amberg. Near Wolfertsfeld in Birgland, you can try traditional archery on the Bow-Vision 3-D course: the circular route is about three kilometres long and runs through the farm forest typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura.

Kirwan festivals are among the traditions of the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land. Since 2023, they have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. They are celebrated every year in their respective villages and are open to visitors and locals alike. Schlachtschüssel is also part of the region’s culinary tradition: many inns serve it regularly, though dates vary from one inn to another. It consists of Wurschtsuppn, boiled pork and blood sausages, liver sausages and bratwursts made to the inn’s own recipes. The choices range from nature and outdoor activities to regional festivals and dishes; which ones matter for your travel plans depends on what you want to focus on.
