In Leipheim, traces of history and experiences in nature go hand in hand: the local history and Peasants’ War museum tells the story of the town and the German Peasants’ War, while Leipheimer Moos, a protected fen, reveals a very different side of the town. There are also walking trails and a range of cycling options, each offering a different focus for your stay.

City History and the Peasants’ War

The Blaue Ente Local History and Peasants’ War Museum explores Leipheim’s history in the old building; the museum barn focuses on the German Peasants’ War. The museum also includes the “Mühlentechnik” exhibition building. There, visitors can explore milling technology in the building and through information panels.

A landmark spot along the city wall is the Jakob-Wehe Gate, a passageway west of the Old Spittal. Jakob Wehe was Leipheim’s first Protestant pastor and one of the leaders of the Leipheimer Haufen during the Peasants’ War of 1525. A guided town tour begins in the castle courtyard, passes through the ensemble of the castle, museum and Zehntstadel, and follows the city wall through the upper town. This lets you combine a museum visit, historic buildings and the town’s history in a single tour.

The Zehntstadel: Transformation and Culture

The Zehntstadel stands at the end of Leipheim’s castle courtyard. The town bought it in 1815; from 1865 to 1970, it served as a municipal depot and as a garage for the Leipheim Volunteer Fire Brigade’s vehicles and equipment. In 1983, the building was saved from demolition, comprehensively renovated from 1993 onwards, and opened in 2002, after several years of extensive restoration, as a venue for art, cultural exchange, creativity and inspiration.

As an event venue, the Zehntstadel offers a varied program, including classical music, jazz, world music, contemporary music, folk, blues, theater, cabaret and children’s culture. Today, in addition to a restaurant, the building houses a public hall and the city council chamber. If you are planning to visit the restaurant or attend an event, check the latest information about public offerings before your trip.

Nature in Leipheimer Moos

Leipheimer Moos is a fen that has been a nature reserve since 1993. Despite having been significantly affected, it offers an appealing and varied landscape and a suitable habitat for many rare animals and plants. A visit to the Moos combines views of a distinctive landscape with an opportunity to learn about nature conservation.

Exploring on Foot

Marked turnoffs from the Donaumoos Circular Route lead to the “Rural History and Nutrition” and “Experience Nature” trails in Leipheimer Moos. The short and long loops are between 3 and 10 kilometers long. The different distances give you several options when planning your own outing.

You can also plan a walk along the city wall: the accessible panoramic walkway runs from the Jakob-Wehe Gate to SchieĂźgraben-StraĂźe. Check on-site access if conditions change.

Cycling Routes with Different Stages

Leipheim is a stop on the 604-kilometer Danube Cycle Path through Germany. The route is optimally signposted and can also be ridden in sections. Another option is the Danube-Alb Circular Route: it passes through Günzburg, Leipheim, Riedheim, Langenau, Rammingen, Asselfingen, Niederstotzingen and Riedhausen; an optional route goes via Bächingen and the mooseum. The total route is 43 kilometers, around 10 kilometers of which are within Leipheim’s municipal area.

The Swabian Potato Tour starts in Leipheim and travels through Bavarian Swabia. You can ride it independently or, if you wish, as a guided tour organized by potato growers. You can join at other stages, leave the route partway through, or ride in the opposite direction. The tour passes directly by historic sites in places, through forests and by other attractions. Its stages are suitable for children and families; the routes are mostly paved, but also include some short climbs and unpaved farm tracks.

Planning Leipheim as Your Base

If you are considering Leipheim as an overnight base, the focus of your trip can help guide your accommodation search: the museum, Zehntstadel and town tour explore the town’s history, while the trails in the Moos and the cycling routes offer other outings.

The historic Leipheim Children’s Festival traditionally takes place on the second weekend in July. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for your chosen year.
