Tittmoning lies right on the Salzach, on the border with Austria. The castle and town square, museums and riverside scenery give the town several different facets: in the historic center, architecture and collections shape the visit, while the Salzach floodplain and trips on the river offer other perspectives. Which of these interests you most can also influence your choice of where to stay.

The Town Square and Castle as a Historic Setting

The 298-meter-long town square is a cohesive historic ensemble. Colorful façades in the regionally distinctive Inn-Salzach style define its appearance. The city wall, almost entirely preserved, dates from the mid-13th century. At 1,700 meters long, it encloses Tittmoning’s historic center and castle.

The square and wall convey history in different ways: at the town square, the unified effect of the façades catches the eye, while the wall’s length gives a clear sense of the extent of the historic fortifications. Together, they offer tangible points of interest if you want to focus your visit on architecture and the town’s history.

Museums: Collections and Hands-on Experiences

The Rupertiwinkel Museum is housed in 23 historic exhibition rooms with original floors and ceilings from the 17th century. Exhibits include prehistoric and early historical finds as well as regional folk art. Another collection comprises 130 Tittmoning shooting targets dating from 1600 to 1930. This broad time span makes the collection a distinct way to explore local collecting history.

The Tannery Museum also focuses on a specific aspect of the town’s history: in the former Marstall of the Troadkasten, it documents the history of tanning in Tittmoning. Its interactive, experimental design invites visitors to touch and try things out for themselves. Visitors can learn by doing—an approach different from viewing exhibits and historic rooms at the Rupertiwinkel Museum.

Public guided tours of Tittmoning Castle and the Rupertiwinkel Museum run from May 1 to October 3, Thursday through Sunday, at 2 p.m. They last about an hour and a half and do not require registration. As dates and times may change, check the current tour schedule before making plans.

Salzach Floodplain: Nature and River from Two Perspectives

The Salzach floodplain near Tittmoning is part of the FFH site 7744-371, “Salzach and Lower Inn,” and belongs to the European Natura 2000 ecological network. The floodplain circular trail runs from the Plätten landing stage through the natural riverside landscape along the Salzach. Plätten boat trips depart from the landing stage at the Tittmoning Salzach Bridge in the floodplain and travel downstream on the Salzach toward Burghausen.

Both experiences start at the Plätten landing stage, but offer different ways to explore the area: the trail runs through the riverside landscape, while the Plätten trip travels downstream on the water. This comparison can help with planning if you are deciding whether to explore the floodplain on foot or experience the Salzach from a boat.

Arts and Crafts at the Castle

Since 2011, the Colloredo Market has been held every year in April as a two-day arts and crafts market in the historic castle complex. This recurring event adds another reason to visit alongside the museums and architectural heritage. The specific market dates and exhibitors may vary; check the latest dates before making plans.

Getting Here and Planning the Right Stay

Tittmoning-Wiesmühl railway station is about seven kilometers from the town center and is connected by a signposted cycling route. When looking for accommodation, take this approximate distance into account when planning your journey. For your stay itself, you can prioritize according to your interests: the town square, castle and museums offer different highlights from the floodplain trail and Plätten boat trip.
