Discover Burgkunstadt
Accommodation in Burgkunstadt
Burgkunstadt can be explored from several perspectives: the historic Upper Town and Lower Town shape the townscape, a walking tour takes you to notable landmarks, and a guided tour beneath the market square offers a different perspective on the town. When planning your trip, you can focus on local history, cellars or Jan Park.
Old Town, Walking Tour and Cellars
The Burgkunstadt Old Town ensemble includes the historic Upper Town, with the former castle grounds and adjoining areas on a spur almost 30 metres above the Obermain valley. It also includes the Lower Town on the edge of the river valley. The difference in elevation makes the layout of the historic town centre clear: the Upper Town and Lower Town form two distinct parts of the ensemble. The pilgrimage chapel of the Five Wounds of Christ stands in the cemetery grounds. A Madonna in a radiating aureole adorns its chancel arch.
The recommended town walk leads to the Vogtei and includes visits to the historic room in the town hall, the Shoemakers’ Museum and the parish church. The return to the Plan is via the Lend. The route is approximately 1,800 metres long and takes about 90 minutes. Distance and duration are approximate; route details may change. If you plan to visit the interiors, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
Another perspective was offered by the “Borkuschter Underworld”: Rudi Fetzer and Karl Heinz Goldfuß led a tour through six selected cellars beneath Burgkunstadt’s market square. For the cellar tours described, sturdy footwear and a flashlight were required; participation was at your own risk. If you plan to join such a tour, check the specific date and conditions for participation in advance.
Jan Park offers a different focus alongside the historic sites. The town considers it one of the largest skateparks in Bavaria. Burgkunstadt thus offers both a suggested route through the Old Town and a dedicated place for skateboarding. The chapel also adds a specific detail to the picture of local architectural and religious history.
When looking for accommodation in Burgkunstadt, you can start by considering which of these focuses you want to shape your stay: the town walk and its historic sites, a possible cellar tour or Jan Park.
In the wider Lichtenfels destination
In the wider Lichtenfels destination, the Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September. Lichtenfels Old Town also offers its own historical focus: it has retained its typically Franconian character, the Bamberg Gate and Kronach Gate are preserved, and parts of the old town wall are still visible. The event date and preserved town gates offer different ways to explore the region’s basket-making tradition and history.
The 14-kilometre Basketry Culture Trail connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along nature-friendly paths through the Main floodplains. Its 23 information boards cover the history and traditions of basket-making, the basket industry and the basket trade on the Upper Main. Near Oberwallenstadt, basketry art installations along the trail include a willow maze for children, a willow shell at the river swimming area and a woven tipi at the Oberwallenstadt Ortswiesensee.
Another hands-on activity in the wider Lichtenfels destination is the small prospecting site at the “Waldfrieden” hiking car park, where you can search for fossils and split them open. Hammers and safety goggles can be borrowed from the Weismain Environmental Station; check whether the equipment is available before your trip.
