Dettelbach: City Walls, Pilgrimage and Franconian Trails
Accommodation in Dettelbach
Discover Dettelbach through its medieval townscape, pilgrimage tradition and trails through the vineyards. The historic center lies around the parish church, market square and town hall. The town and its surroundings also offer art and themed trails that explore different aspects of the area.
Townscape and Churches
Dettelbach’s late medieval town wall is just over 1,400 meters long. According to municipal figures from 2024, 38 of the approximately 52 towers that once stood along it are still visible; a few more can only just be made out. The distinction between visible towers and traces that are barely recognizable gives an impression of how the fortifications have changed over time.
With its two unequal towers, St. Augustine’s parish church is a landmark of Dettelbach. Notable attractions include its Gothic interior and the altarpiece by artist Michael Triegel, which forms the church’s spiritual center. The late Gothic town hall also shapes the historic center: its double-flight open staircase is one of its distinctive architectural features. The town hall is considered one of the most beautiful in Kitzingen district and is the oldest.
The pilgrimage church “Maria in arena” offers another way to explore the town’s history. It was built in 1573 and consecrated on September 8, 1613. Its origins are connected with the revival of the Dettelbach pilgrimage—a story that continues to play an important role in the town today.
Art, Pilgrimage and Trails
Right next to the historic town hall, the “Pilgrims & Pilgrimage” art museum is located in KUK Dettelbach. It features original works of art and objects and focuses on the Diocese of Würzburg’s most significant Marian pilgrimage, which remains active today. This pilgrimage has shaped life in Dettelbach for over 500 years. The church, town hall and museum thus showcase different facets of the town’s history: architecture, religious tradition and artistic works.
The Legends and Myths Trail runs for around two kilometers through the vineyards and the Dettelbach countryside. Twelve information boards share myths about Dettelbach as well as facts about the geology of the Main River, the development of agriculture and the region’s winegrowing. The 11-kilometer “TraumRunde” Dettelbach circular hike covers a different distance and has a different focus: the Herz-Jesu-Höhe is one of the tour’s highlights. The two routes are easy to distinguish by their length and themes.
The Joseph-Kram Poets’ Trail also combines a route with cultural content. Its 15 stations feature Franconian poems about the living conditions, ways of thinking and emotions of the rural population in the 19th century. The trail complements the “Pilgervolk” and “Panta Rhei” cultural and art trails. From Dettelbach, you can also cycle sections of the Main Cycle Route. When planning your day, you can choose between local history, literary stops, hiking trails and cycling.
Local Flavors and Getting There
Dettelbach specialties include Muskatzinen: these spiced pastries are made only in Dettelbach, were created especially for pilgrims and are often served with wine. This local tradition adds a culinary dimension to the experience of the churches and museum.
When choosing accommodation for your stay, the balance you want between culture and outdoor activities can help guide you: would you like to focus your trip mainly on the historic center and pilgrimage history, or set aside time for the longer trails as well? For train travel, Dettelbach-Bahnhof station is about 5 kilometers from Dettelbach-Stadt. There is ample free parking for cars at the station; bus access is limited. Trains to WĂĽrzburg or Nuremberg run hourly. Check train schedules and bus connections before you travel.
