Großlangheim: Wine Trails, History and Nature
Accommodation in Großlangheim
Großlangheim combines winegrowing with traces of history and botanical highlights. The village is one of the oldest winegrowing communities in the area. A wine experience trail with information boards and scenic views, the Kracken Trail with its stations, the frescoes in St. Anthony’s Chapel and seasonal nature attractions offer several possible focuses for your stay.
Winegrowing along the trail and at the viewpoint
At terroir f by the Hardthütte, a viewing platform in the shape of a reclining Bocksbeutel rises above the Kiliansberg vineyard. It is a symbol and hallmark of Franconian wine. The wine experience trail starts at the Winzerbrünnle in the village center and leads to the Hardthütte, with information boards about wine, grape varieties and winegrowing along the way. From there, panoramic views stretch from the Schwanberg across the Main Valley.
The trail thus offers two specific ways to experience wine: information about grape varieties and winegrowing along the route, and views across the landscape at the destination. If you want to experience Großlangheim primarily through its wine, this route provides a fitting theme.
Trails with different focuses
The public Kracken Trail runs around Großlangheim, is about 5 kilometers long and can be walked in stages. Its 15 stations include play features and places to rest. These include a water playground, a barefoot path and fitness equipment for adults. The different stations therefore offer a different focus from the wine experience trail: here, the emphasis is on exercise, play features and breaks; there, on information boards about wine and winegrowing.
When planning, you can also take into account the option of walking the Kracken Trail in stages. This lets you tackle it in sections rather than planning it as one continuous walk. The stations give the trail a changing character along the way.
Chapel art and local history
The frescoes in St. Anthony’s Chapel date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The cycle of 16 paintings depicts scenes from the life of St. Anthony. After a seven-year restoration, the chapel reopened in 1977. If you would like to visit, contact the Großlangheim municipal administration in advance; check the contact details before your trip.
The village’s history also has a distinctive aspect: Großlangheim was the principal town of the county for a time and apparently also served as the counts’ residence at certain times. One of the guided tour topics on offer is the Marterlesweg, a trail featuring stone monuments to popular piety. Check with the local guides whether and when this topic is currently offered. If you wish, the guides can also arrange a wine tasting as part of a tour; coordinate this request with them directly.
Nature throughout the seasons
Orchid species and many other plants that have become rare can be found year-round in the “Kranzer” wetland biotope. The early-spring woodland, by contrast, invites visitors to take walks in early spring; snowflakes can be seen among the old oak trees. Their flowering time varies from year to year.
The two nature attractions also differ in terms of when to visit: plants in the Kranzer are present year-round, while the early-spring woodland is especially appealing in early spring. If you are traveling to see the snowflakes, take their year-to-year variation in flowering time into account when planning your trip.

In the broader destination of Kitzingen, other historic buildings in the spotlight include the Falterturm tower and the Old Main Bridge. The Falterturm, formerly called the “Falltorturm,” was built between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower in the outer town wall. The Old Main Bridge, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. This architectural history adds a distinct historical dimension to the broader destination of Kitzingen.
