Discover Höchberg: Forest Trails, Water and Culture
Accommodation in Höchberg
Höchberg can be explored in different ways: water at the Mainlandbad, paths through woodland and several historic sites sit alongside local festival traditions and a varied cultural programme. Depending on your stay, you can give different emphasis to outdoor activities, history and events.
Water and Forest Trails
The Mainlandbad has a 25-metre swimming pool with five lanes. There is also a large non-swimmers’ pool, with a water depth ranging from 0.6 to 1.30 metres. The details about the length, lanes and depth make it easy to distinguish between the two pools and provide a practical guide for planning your visit.
In addition to the Mainlandbad, the Mainlandzentrum in Höchberg includes a restaurant with a bowling alley, a sports hall and a miniature golf course. If you plan to visit any of the facilities, check the operator’s latest information in advance.
There are also different kinds of routes for exploring on foot. In Höchberg’s municipal area, the “Naturpfad” (Nature Trail) runs from Oberzell Monastery through state and municipal woodland to Erbachshof. The forest nature trail, by contrast, is described as a circular walk: after about an hour, it returns to the car park at the Waldsportplatz sports ground. The approximate duration is a useful guide for planning your time.
Hiking trails to Frankenwarte start at the “Kreuzle”, at the end of “Weg zum Kreuz” street. Other trails lead from there into the Steinbachtal valley. The Naturpfad, the forest nature trail and the routes from the Kreuzle differ in their layouts: from a named start and destination, to a circular route, to hiking destinations in two directions.
Traditions and Events
The traditional “Tanz um den Maibaum” (Maypole Dance) takes place on the market square every year on 1 May. Members of the Heimat- und Trachtenverein dance in traditional Franconian costume. When Höchberg was granted market-town status in 1990, the large festival on the market square was named “Höchberger Marktfest”.
On Kirchweih Sunday, local residents can take part in the “Hammeltanz” and “Göggelesschlagen” on the market square. Since 2020, the Kulturscheune Höchberg has been a meeting place for culture lovers from Würzburg district. Its programme includes cabaret, music, theatre, film, readings, talks and events for specific audiences. The range therefore extends from stage performances and film evenings to talks. If you have a particular date in mind, check the event schedule in advance.
Churches and Historic Sites
The Catholic parish church of Mariä Geburt was one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites for Würzburg and the surrounding area, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. The seven Stations of the Cross by Höchberg’s Kreuzkapelle also have several layers of significance: their connection to the witch trials makes them a monument of cultural history, their association with the renowned master Michael Kern makes them an artistic monument, and the subjects of the relief panels make them a religious monument.
The former synagogue in Höchberg was purchased by the Evangelical Lutheran parish in 1951 and converted into a Protestant place of worship. Two documentation rooms in the former Israelite preparatory school house a permanent exhibition on this subject; guided tours are also available. Check arrangements for tours before your visit.
