Discover Rottendorf through its distinctive architectural history and clearly differentiated trails. The moated castle with its civic garden is one of the town’s oldest buildings and was built before 1500. The Kulturstall explores rural working and everyday life from 1800 to 1950, while the hiking and cycling trails offer a more active focus. This lets you plan your days around local history, exhibition themes or the route you choose.

Moated Castle, Civic Garden and Käppele

The moated castle’s history extends beyond its early construction. The “Burck,” the former moated castle, was originally fortified with a wall and surrounded by a moat until 1580. A coat-of-arms stone belonging to Lamprecht von Bibra can still be seen at the entrance. Following the laying of the foundation stone in 2012, the building was renovated and converted into a library with a reading café, as well as a multipurpose hall for community events and weddings.

The civic garden also has several features that are easy to appreciate together: a circular path runs along the perimeter wall, and a water lily pond lies to the south. A permanent stage stands on the north side of the inner ring wall, with seating tiers opposite for theatrical performances. The garden thus combines paths through the grounds with a clearly defined venue for events.

The Rottendorf Käppele tells a story from a different period. A small chapel was built on this site in 1625, in the midst of the Thirty Years’ War. Known at the time as the “Heiligen-Häuslein,” it could accommodate about 15 people. Work on the present-day Käppele began in 1753, and it was consecrated in 1754 under the title of Our Lady of Sorrows. These two dates mark distinct chapters in the chapel’s history.

Village Museum and Rural Life

The Rottendorf Kulturstall at HauptstraĂźe 14 is a small village museum devoted to rural working and everyday life from 1800 to 1950. Its exhibition covers livestock farming and farm management, tilling the soil, sowing and harvesting, viticulture and household management. It also features tools from historic trades: cooper, carpenter, wheelwright, cabinetmaker, cobbler and barber. Fieldwork, farm life and craftsmanship are presented side by side, offering several ways to explore the exhibition.

Hiking Trails by Theme and Distance

The “Kronstadter Boden” circular hiking trail is about 12.9 kilometres long and explores the southern part of the Rottendorf municipal area. It starts and ends on “Am Marienheim” street, where parking is available, as it is nearby. At around 6.2 kilometres, the “From Church to Church” circular trail is considerably shorter. Marked with a yellow bar on a white background, it leads to three churches, passing two of them, as well as to two chapels and numerous wayside shrines in Rottendorf.

The “Rothof Hiking Trail” is about 6.1 kilometres long and marked with a blue bar on a white background. It explores Rothof, considered a popular day-trip destination by Rottendorf residents. The two shorter trails are similar in length but differ in theme: one focuses on churches, chapels and wayside shrines, while the other takes in Rothof. The longer “Kronstadter Boden” trail offers a different distance and leads through the southern part of the municipal area.

Cycling Routes and Finding Accommodation

Rottendorf’s cycling routes are part of an intermunicipal pedelec and cycling network. Various cycling routes have been developed in the municipal area and are signposted with distances in kilometres. Named connections run from Rottendorf to Würzburg, to Gerbrunn and to the Maintal hiking trail; via Biebelried to Kitzingen; to Mainfrankenpark; and via Effeldorf to Dettelbach. Rottendorf is also connected to the Maintal Cycle Route. You can use the signposted destinations and stated distances to help choose your route.

The named cycling routes also offer a choice of destinations. You can match your search for accommodation with the experiences in Rottendorf that interest you most.
