Würzburg: Baroque, Main River Views and Wine Country
Accommodation in Würzburg
Würzburg combines Baroque architecture with views of the Main River and a distinctive wine-growing landscape. Between the Residence, Marienberg Fortress and the vineyards along the river, there are a range of themes to shape your trip: culture and history, walks or Franconian wine traditions. You can explore the city according to your own interests, without any one focus overshadowing everything else.
Baroque Architecture and Franconian History
Würzburg Residence was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981, becoming the third site in Germany to be included. It is considered a masterpiece of the South German Baroque and one of the most significant palaces in Europe. The Court Garden is also part of the ensemble’s appeal: it was laid out to incorporate the Baroque bastions and features numerous garden sculptures. The Residence and its garden combine architecture and landscaped outdoor spaces to create a cultural focal point in the city.
Another perspective on Würzburg can be found at Marienberg Fortress, a prominent landmark visible from afar and a testament to more than 1,000 years of history. The Museum für Franken is housed in the fortress’s Baroque armoury. Its collection includes works of Franconian art, including sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider. Käppele also has its own architectural history: from 1747 to 1750, the pilgrimage church was added to an existing shrine chapel based on plans by Balthasar Neumann. A picturesque route with 14 chapels and life-size groups of figures by Peter Wagner leads there on foot.
Main River Views, Vineyards and Walking Routes
From the Old Main Bridge, you can enjoy views of Marienberg Fortress, Käppele and Würzburg’s vineyards. The bridge is also decorated with Baroque statues of saints: the distinctive figures are 4.5 metres tall and were added around 1730. The local Brückenschoppen, a wine enjoyed on the bridge, is a longstanding tradition—architecture, river views and wine come together here as a quintessential Würzburg experience.
North of the old town, the world-famous Würzburger Stein vineyard stretches in a shell-shaped curve along the Main. It covers 85 hectares and is Germany’s largest contiguous individual vineyard site. Among the grapes grown here are Silvaner, Riesling and Pinot Blanc. Guided Steinwein hikes follow well-maintained vineyard paths, with knowledgeable guides explaining winegrowing, the work of the winemakers and the wines of Würzburger Steinberg. If you would rather combine a walk with a historic destination, there is a scenic hiking route from St. Burkard to Marienberg Fortress.
Choose the Focus of Your Trip
If architecture and art collections are your main interests, the Residence and the fortress offer different ways to explore Würzburg’s history. Wine enthusiasts will find other points of interest at Steinberg and on the Old Main Bridge; the walking routes described here add time on foot to a cultural stay. You can choose your accommodation based on the experiences that interest you most in Würzburg.
More Places in the Würzburg Destination
The wider Würzburg destination also includes distinct towns, each with its own character. In Ochsenfurt, an almost complete system of fortifications, with numerous gates and towers, frames the historic old town. The New Town Hall dates from the 15th century; its small lance tower houses a unique clock featuring figures and the moon. In Röttingen, the approximately two-kilometre-long Sundial Trail passes 25 different sundials within and around the town walls.
The Main river promenade in Veitshöchheim offers more ways to enjoy the area: its green spaces feature sculptures by various artists. There is also a large adventure playground with play equipment for all age groups, including a trampoline and climbing wall, as well as a barefoot path and a Kneipp pool for walking in water. From April to October, excursion boats operated by the “Weiße Flotte” run between Veitshöchheim and Würzburg several times a day; check the current timetable before your trip.
