Nordhalben combines the heights of the Franconian Forest with a landscape of extensive meadows and forests. There are also trails along the Green Belt and places where the region’s history comes to life. Nature experiences and local history need not be part of two separate travel plans: you can focus on hiking or combine culture and landscape.

Meadows, Forests and Special Natural Sites

Nordhalben is home to valuable natural habitats that shelter rare plant and animal species. The “Through the Bärwurzwiesen” hiking trail offers a glimpse of the species-rich meadows on the plateau: it runs along the Green Belt and across the Nordhalben plateau. The FrankenwaldSteigla “Through the Bärwurzwiesen” route starts at the car park of the outdoor nature pool on the edge of town.

Schloßberg also shows two sides of Nordhalben. From there, the view extends across the Green Belt into neighbouring Thuringia and over several valleys of the Franconian Forest. The former quarry is also located on Schloßberg; it is the type locality of the trace fossil “Segmentichnus mohri,” discovered in 2010. This unusual scientific significance adds a detail to the landscape that stands apart from the hiking themes.

Hiking Trails and Border History

The Nordhalben Border Trail is 4.3 kilometres long and classified as an easy hiking trail. Its length and difficulty rating provide a clear guide when choosing a route. “Through the Bärwurzwiesen” offers a different focus, with the Green Belt and the plateau’s species-rich meadows.

Those interested in the course of historical borders will also find a fitting connection to the Nordhalben Sculpture Trail: it follows the old Badweg out into the Green Belt, where the border between Bavaria and Thuringia once ran. The second stage of the FrankenwaldSteig offers another point of reference for hikers. It starts on Amlichstraße in Nordhalben, not far from the Lace-Making Museum.

Museum, Lace-Making School and Architectural History

The Nordhalben Historical Local Museum is located in the lace-making school and displays exhibits on the town’s history in seven rooms arranged by theme. Among the exhibits are a faithfully recreated kitchen and a bedroom. The border documentation centre is also housed in the lace-making school; the International Lace Collection there is an exhibition of European standing. The museum, documentation centre and collection offer different ways to explore local and craft history.

The Nordhalben Artists’ House, also known as “Maxhaus,” was renovated as a residence and workplace for artists. The Evangelical Jubilate Church was built between 1925 and 1926 and renovated in 1997. Both add further points of interest alongside the border history and collections. The Chapel of the Visitation of Mary, known locally as the Marienkapelle, welcomes visitors to look around and linger during the day; check the opening arrangements before visiting.
