Discover Teuschnitz: nature, trails and culture
Accommodation in Teuschnitz
The Teuschnitz floodplain, rare medicinal herbs and trails for a range of activities give Teuschnitz a distinctly nature-focused character. The town is also home to the Arnika Academy and the pilgrimage church in Haßlach.
Experience nature and choose your trails
In the Teuschnitz floodplain, in the northern part of Frankenwald Nature Park, the protected and rare medicinal plant arnica grows in many meadows, along with more than 50 other medicinal herbs. These include Bärwurz. The floodplain is also part of Bavaria’s Species and Biotope Protection Programme. Here, rich plant life and nature conservation go hand in hand: anyone interested in herbs will find two notable examples in arnica and Bärwurz.
Along the Teuschnitz-Aue Nature Trail, nine markers with symbols and QR codes explain features of the natural environment and landscape. Teuschnitz also has numerous well-marked trails for hikers, mountain bikers, Nordic walkers and people out for a stroll. One option is the 10-kilometre FrankenwaldSteigla Arnikaweg, which starts at the sports ground in Teuschnitz. The nature trail combines exercise with information about nature and the landscape via QR codes; the Arnikaweg is a 10-kilometre route starting at the sports ground.
The seasons also change the character of the activities. In the area around Teuschnitz, cross-country ski trails are groomed in the winter months when snow conditions permit. Winter walking routes around Teuschnitz include the Galgenberg loop and “Winter am Naturweg”. The ski trails are therefore explicitly dependent on suitable snow conditions; bear this in mind when planning a winter outing.
Herbal knowledge and an active break
The teaching and display herb garden at the Arnika Academy covers 3,000 square metres. The academy also shares knowledge about nature through seminars, lectures and workshops. The garden and educational activities offer different ways to engage: you can explore the cultivated world of herbs or focus on an event format. If you are planning a seminar, lecture or workshop, check the Arnika Academy’s current programme.
The multi-generational playground in Teuschnitz has a climbing tower, a double zip line, a balance course, a watercourse and a Kneipp pool. It brings together a range of play and activity features in one place. As the condition of facilities can change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before visiting.
Culture in Haßlach and the wider Kronach travel destination
The pilgrimage church “Maria, Queen of the Martyrs and the 14 Holy Helpers” is located in Haßlach, a district of Teuschnitz. It adds a specific cultural point of interest within the town to its nature-focused attractions.
The wider Kronach travel destination brings together a variety of landscapes. The larger northeastern part of the district extends into the Frankenwald, a densely forested, gently rolling upland range with numerous valleys at elevations of around 500 to just over 700 metres. The rest of the district lies in the northern part of the Upper Main Hills. This area descends southwest from the Frankenwald to around 300 to 500 metres and features escarpments and terraces.
The wider Kronach travel destination also offers a range of active and cultural pursuits. A 18-kilometre section of the Rennsteig runs through the district. The Rodachtalbahn operates between Steinwiesen and Nordhalben with a historic locomotive and carriages; check operating days before travelling. Those interested in architectural history can explore a blend of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque fortification architecture at Rosenberg Fortress. The oldest surviving document to mention the name “Rosenberg” dates from 1249.
