The picturesque main village of Wilhelmsthal is reminiscent of a mountain village. Hiking trails, churches and views from Eichsberg give the place a variety of facets: options range from an easy circular hike taking a little over two hours to a difficult route of around six hours. This lets you tailor your trip to the landscape, culture and the amount of time you want to spend hiking each day.

Hiking Trails Between the Valley and Far-Reaching Views

The Schieferbruch-Weg KC 81 is an easy, 6.3-kilometer circular hike. From Wilhelmsthal, it passes the former slate quarry on the way to Hesselbach and back; the walking time is about two hours and 15 minutes. The route involves 262 meters of elevation gain and 262 meters of descent. It combines a manageable distance with a clearly defined destination along the way.

The southern route of the Floßherren-Weg takes more time: it runs 11.1 kilometers from Wilhelmsthal to Glosberg, takes around two hours and 45 minutes, and involves 413 meters of elevation gain and 361 meters of descent. Its difficulty level is moderate. The differences in distance, duration and difficulty give people traveling together a concrete basis for planning their day.

The longest and most difficult of the three hikes described here, the Grümpel-Floßteich-Weg KC 82 runs 22.8 kilometers from the Grümpel Valley via Hubertushöhe and past the water and observation tower in Birnbaum, before returning to Wilhelmsthal. It takes around six hours and involves 443 meters of elevation gain and 443 meters of descent. The easier circular route and this challenging hike thus suit very different day plans. For hiking trails, it is advisable to check the signposting and conditions on site.

The idyllic Grümpel Valley is also a worthwhile destination in its own right. From the summit of Eichsberg, the view extends to the Fichtelgebirge, Staffelberg, the Basilica of Vierzehnheiligen, Coburg Fortress and the southern Thuringian Forest. If you would like to include a bike ride in your plans, a popular cycle route runs from the district town of Kronach to Wilhelmsthal. Surfaces and detours may vary, so check the current route before setting out.

Churches, Chapels and Local History

A visit to St. Joseph's Parish Church is well worth it in Wilhelmsthal. Its warm atmosphere, modern colored windows in the new chancel and Metzler organ define the church interior. The slate-roofed Marienkapelle at Hohes Kreuz offers a different perspective. Eight siblings built it in 1998 in memory of their parents; it was consecrated on July 11 of that same year.

Culture and landscape can also be enjoyed together in other parts of the municipality. A mountain-bike route runs between Lahm and Effelter. Effelter is home to a former water-powered sawmill, now converted into a youth education center and located in the Dobertal nature reserve. The village's branch church of St. Peter and Paul was built around 1400 and rebuilt after the great fire of 1807.

In Steinberg, the historic Alt Pankratius Castle Church is the surviving remnant of the former castle complex on Schlossberg. It can be visited in summer; check the current visiting arrangements in advance. Together with St. Joseph's Parish Church and the Marienkapelle, it offers different ways to explore the municipality's religious and local history.

Festivals and Planning Your Stay

The annual Wilhelmsthal local heritage festival takes place on the first Sunday in August. Check the specific dates for the year before you travel. In the municipality, the Apple Festival has been held every two years since 2002 at the historic Effelter Mill in the village of Effelter; an Apple Queen is also crowned at the event. It is a good idea to confirm the next date in advance here, too.

When looking for accommodation in Wilhelmsthal, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: the hikes can be compared by length, duration and difficulty; churches and chapels add a cultural dimension, while the festivals take place on recurring dates. Then choose accommodation to suit your travel plans.
