Half-timbered town in Haßberge Nature Park

Hofheim in Unterfranken lies in the heart of the Haßberge Nature Park’s low mountain landscape. As a historic half-timbered town, it is defined by fortified town gates, remains of the old town wall and lovingly restored half-timbered houses. One particularly notable historic building is the pharmacy in the half-timbered ensemble: it was built in 1463 as a town residence and tithe court of the Barons Truchseß von Wetzhausen. Hofheim’s history can thus be seen in tangible buildings, from the half-timbered houses and fortification remains to this early civic residence.

Late Gothic art and railway history

The parish church of St. John the Baptist is one of the sights. A sculpture of the church’s patron saint stands in the gable of the late Gothic church building, which dates to around 1520. The church also houses late Gothic wooden sculptures: a group depicting the Crucifixion from around 1460, as well as figures of a holy deacon and Saint Barbara. The dates are easy to distinguish: the Crucifixion group is dated to around six decades before the church building of around 1520. The artistic heritage thus ranges from the gable decoration to several figures inside the church.

Railway history also has a tangible presence in Hofheim. The railway museum in the former Hofheim railway station is devoted in detail to the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. On the outdoor grounds, you can see an avenue of signals, various locomotives, a small locomotive, passenger coaches with a baggage compartment, a track maintenance vehicle and a handcar. The outdoor area can be visited at any time; visits to the interior require advance registration or an appointment. If you plan to visit the interior, arrange your visit in advance. The former station provides a fitting setting for the museum’s subject: the history and technology of the local railway.

Circular trails and historic landscapes

Bettenburg Castle lies northeast of Hofheim in the surrounding area. The Renaissance castle is not open to visitors; the associated Bettenburg Landscape Park is accessible at any time. Guided garden tours can be booked there. Check the booking arrangements if you plan to join a tour. The Bettenburg Landscape Park circular hiking trail is 1.6 kilometres long and very easy; both the ascent and descent involve 40 metres of elevation gain. It offers a short circuit with a clearly stated distance.

Another historic landmark leads to the Schwedenschanze: this ring fortification dating from the Hallstatt period lies on the Rennweg near Eichelsdorf. The Schwedenschanze observation tower offers panoramic views. Its archaeological history and viewpoint provide two different reasons to visit.

Hiking and cycling in the Haßberge

A dense network of hiking and cycling trails makes it easy to explore Hofheim. Six themed e-bike tours start at the information point on the market square and head into the surrounding Haßberge; check the route details before setting off. Unlike the short circuit in the landscape park, the e-bike routes lead into the surrounding Haßberge and offer a different way to spend your stay. You can choose between an easy hike and several themed cycling tours.

When looking for accommodation, your travel interests can help guide your choice: would you like to focus on Hofheim’s half-timbered houses, church and railway history, or are you more drawn to the circular trail, observation tower and e-bike tours? Choosing a clear priority can help you select accommodation that suits the kind of stay you want.
