Discover Dingolfing: Isar Whispers and City History
Accommodation in Dingolfing
Dingolfing combines nature themes along the banks of the Isar with striking buildings and a multifaceted city history. These varied impressions give you a clear choice for your trip: would you like to learn about life by the river, discover architectural features, or explore the city's history?
Whispers of the Isar on Dingolfing's riverbanks
Since 2022, QR-code signs for Isar Whispers have stood at five benches along the Isar beach in Dingolfing. They tell of croaking frogs, migrating fish, and brightly colored kingfishers. The many ways the Isar offers visitors a chance to enjoy the river are also among the topics. Isar Whispers thus combines nature themes with a look at the river as a place for a range of activities. This perspective adds a distinct dimension to the city's sights: the focus here is on the signs' content and their themes along the banks of the Isar.
Landmarks, museums, and church architecture
The Storchenturm is a landmark of Dingolfing and stands at the western end of the Upper Town. The Museum Dingolfing also extends across three historic buildings in the Upper Town: the Herzogburg, the Pfleghof, and the Getreidekasten. It presents the city's history and industrial history from the Neolithic Age to the present day. The Herzogburg was built around 1410 as the Kastner's official residence and as lodgings for the Bavarian dukes; it has housed the museum since 1959. This site therefore brings together the building's early history and the broad sweep of the city's history and industrial heritage.
St. John's Parish Church is a three-aisled hall church with an ambulatory and ten side chapels. The term “three-aisled” describes the layout of the church interior; the ambulatory and side chapels add to these architectural features. An ossuary dating from the 17th century is attached to the Church of the Holy Trinity (Schuster Chapel). Together, the churches display a range of architectural details that set them apart from the widely known Storchenturm landmark: here, the layout of a church interior; there, the connection between a chapel and a historic ossuary.
More cultural and nature themes in Dingolfing-Landau
The wider destination of Dingolfing-Landau has its own themes to explore. At Kastenhof Landau, original archaeological finds from the region tell the story of the first farmers. Replicas to handle, striking images, and Lisar, a lifelike figure of a Neolithic woman, bring the past to life. The Landau local history museum in the WeiĂźgerberhaus focuses on rural domestic culture, faith and piety, Landau's history, bourgeois domestic life and self-representation, and crafts in the town. Its main focus is the 19th century. The pilgrimage church of Maria im Steinfels offers a different historical perspective: it was consecrated in 1726, and its altar stands in front of a Nagelfluh rock face.
The Vilstal also expands the choice of nature and water activities in the wider destination of Dingolfing-Landau. The “Vilstal near Marklkofen” nature reserve covers nearly 175 hectares and provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The approximately 100-hectare Vilstalsee lies within the protected area. It is a great place for walks and cycling tours, and offers opportunities for boating, sailing, and surfing. These activities on the lake are quite different from Dingolfing's focus on city history and architecture.
When choosing accommodations, you can start by considering the themes you want to shape your trip: Dingolfing's city history and Isar Whispers, or other cultural, nature, and water experiences in the wider destination of Dingolfing-Landau.
