In Stubenberg, the highly visible late Gothic parish and pilgrimage church of St. George and St. Urban dominates the local landscape. Alongside church art and local history, the Wayside Shrines Trail, a cycling route through the Stubenberg hills and the rock labyrinth near Kirn offer different kinds of activities.

Church Art and History in Stubenberg

The frescoes in the choir and nave of the church were painted by Carl Johann Gasteiger. The parish church also contains a red marble tomb for Wolfgang Paumgartner, dated 1512. The two works lend the church interior distinct historical accents: frescoes in two parts of the church are set alongside a dated tomb. The town’s history is also connected to the building. The church stands on the site of a former castle and is historically closely linked to Stubenberg Castle. The castle burned down in 1743.

On Foot, by Bike or Among the Rocks

The circular hiking trail 10, the Wayside Shrines Trail, is about 7 km long and starts at the Gasthaus Hofmark in Stubenberg. It passes the Welschen wayside shrine and the Meindl Chapel before returning to Stubenberg. The Elexenau Circular Route complements the hiking options as a cycling route: it is about 14 km long and runs through the Stubenberg hills. This means you can compare a shorter walk with a cycling route that is roughly twice as long. Before setting out on a hike or bike ride, it is worth checking current trail conditions locally. At the rock labyrinth near Kirn, climbing enthusiasts can scramble up over the rocks. The local options therefore differ not only in route length, but also in activity.

More to Explore in the Wider Rottal-Inn Destination

The wider Rottal-Inn destination offers a range of other attractions. The Rottal Terme has more than 30 pleasantly warm thermal-water pools at temperatures of 26 to 40 °C, as well as 13 different saunas and steam baths; these figures may change during renovations. Every year, the Theater an der Rott presents premieres in drama, musical theatre, concerts, dance, operetta and opera, and is the only theatre in Germany owned by a rural district. Individual productions vary. The “Gothic Tours” help residents and visitors explore selected Gothic monuments with the aid of brochures, maps, a tour portal and the Gothic Portal. The Gothic Portal offers on-site audio guides to Gothic buildings, as well as an online museum with information, knowledge and learning resources. These digital offerings may continue to evolve. For outdoor activity, the Rottal-Inn leisure region has an extensive network of paths spanning several hundred kilometres for hikers and cyclists. The tour portal supports individual trip planning with elevation profiles, information on trail conditions and GPX downloads. The Inn Cycle Path runs through the Lower Inn European Nature Reserve and offers insights into its flora and fauna.
