Tann amid forested hills and panoramic views

A hilly, forested landscape, sweeping views and a rich local history shape Tann. The town lies in southeastern Bavaria, in the south of the Rottal-Inn district, near the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers and close to the Austrian border near Braunau and Burghausen. This gives you a geographical sense of Tann before you decide which themes will shape your stay: the landscape and leisure activities in town, or cultural and nature experiences across the wider Rottal-Inn destination.

The landscape around Tann offers ever-changing panoramic views. Together with the forests and hills, it provides a different focus from the historical stories associated with the town. You can take both into account when planning your trip, without letting any one experience define Tann’s character.

Pilgrimage, church and market history

An important chapter in the town’s history is the pilgrimage to the “Lord of Tann,” a crucifix revered as miraculous. It reached its height at the end of the 17th century. St. Peter and Paul Parish Church also shapes Tann’s cultural identity; it was built in the Neoclassical style.

The “Tanner Tuch” (Tann cloth), which became widely known thanks to the diligence of Tann’s citizens, is also part of local tradition. The Martinimarkt dates back to 1481: Duke Georg founded it, and it is the oldest of the markets named in Tann. For 2026, the Martinimarkt is listed among Tann’s markets.

These themes offer culture enthusiasts different points of interest: the history of the pilgrimage, the Neoclassical church, the textile tradition and a market with a long history dating back to its founding. They do not all tell the same story, but reveal different sides of Tann’s development.

Leisure in Tann and the surrounding area

Tann has an outdoor swimming pool. A mini-golf course is located in Zeilarn, 3 km away. This gives you two different options to consider when planning your leisure time: the outdoor pool in town and mini golf nearby.

Rottal-Inn as a wider travel destination

The wider Rottal-Inn destination offers more than the immediate attractions of Tann. The Rottal-Inn leisure region has a well-developed, extensive network of trails, with several hundred kilometres for hikers and cyclists. Its tour portal supports custom route planning with information on elevation profiles and trail conditions, as well as GPX downloads. The Inn Cycle Path runs through the Lower Inn European Nature Reserve and offers insights into the region’s flora and fauna.

The wider Rottal-Inn area also offers more for culture enthusiasts. The “Gothic Tours” take locals and tourists to selected Gothic monuments; brochures, maps, the tour portal and the Gothic portal are available. The Gothic portal offers audio guides to Gothic buildings that can be accessed on site, as well as an online museum with information, knowledge and learning resources. Each year, the Theater an der Rott presents premieres in drama, musicals, concerts, dance, operetta and opera. It is the only theatre in Germany owned by a district; the individual productions change.

For wellness and water, the Rottal Terme is another regional point of interest. It has more than 30 thermal pools with temperatures ranging from 26 to 40 °C, as well as 13 different saunas and steam baths. It also features a 105-metre-long thermal water channel and health, prevention and wellness services. These figures may change if facilities are renovated; check the latest information before visiting. In 2026, the Rottaler Hoftour is an experience programme exploring rural life, everyday work, animals, farming culture, traditional crafts, handicraft techniques and regional specialities.
