Untergriesbach offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: cycle routes and a pilgrimage route, walks and hikes, a listed market square ensemble, and a cross-country skiing option in Gottsdorf. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether cycling, hiking, the townscape or seasonal activities should shape your stay.

Cycle and pilgrimage routes with different courses

The Danube Cycle Path follows the Danube through the municipal area as far as the Austrian border at Jochenstein. The Danube–Moldau Cycle Path takes a different route: it leads from Obernzell via Untergriesbach to Haidmühle. Your choice therefore depends above all on the route you want to take: along the Danube to the border at Jochenstein, or through Obernzell, Untergriesbach and Haidmühle.

The Way of St. James from Krumau to Kufstein also passes through Untergriesbach. Long-distance hikers can join the pilgrimage route there. This means you can plan your tour around a pilgrimage route as well as cycling.

Late Gothic architecture around the market square

The Late Gothic parish church of St. Michael is part of the listed market square ensemble in Untergriesbach. The church therefore does not stand alone: it is part of the protected market square setting. If you are interested in architecture, this connection offers a tangible cultural point of interest alongside the town’s cycling and nature themes.

The Danube Gorge, uplands and natural scenery

The Donauleiten nature reserve and the uplands around Untergriesbach offer opportunities for walks and hikes. These two landscape settings provide different starting points for planning your time outdoors. A prominent high point is KĂĽhberg near SteinbĂĽchl/KĂĽhberg: at 846 m, it is the highest mountain in the municipal area. The Danube panoramic viewpoint at Ebenstein is another part of the natural scenery awaiting visitors to Untergriesbach.

For a different focus, there is also Lake Ranna in the surrounding area. It is about 6.5 km from Untergriesbach and offers swimming opportunities and leisure activities amid meadows and forests. If you would like to add swimming and leisure options to your stay, the lake is a destination in its own right alongside the walking and hiking opportunities.

Bike park and cross-country skiing in Gottsdorf

In September 2020, Ski-Club Jochenstein e.V. opened a BIKE PARK in Untergriesbach next to the WĂĽrmchen playground and the tennis courts. Its features include a pump track, a rock garden, and an area with ramps and seesaws. If you plan to visit the park, check local conditions beforehand.

In Gottsdorf, a cross-country ski trail starts at the sports ground. One section is usually groomed for skating, depending on the weather and conditions. This gives you another activity to plan for the colder months, although grooming remains subject to the prevailing conditions.

More cultural and nature themes in the wider Passau destination

In the wider Passau destination, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village is located in Tittling. Spread over 20 hectares, you can visit more than 100 residential and agricultural buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels, field monuments and Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666.

Also in the wider Passau destination, the Haus am Strom nature experience centre is situated in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal spas; well-known thermal springs are found in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. For hiking, the Passau region has the Granite Adventure Hiking Trail around Hauzenberg and the Smugglers’ Trail in the Danube Pearls.

Regional culture includes the Ortenburg Castle Culture programme, an event series organised by the Förderkreis Schloss Ortenburg. From April to December, it features music events, cabaret, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, talks and guided tours. If these activities interest you, check the dates for the season.
