Großheubach combines a wine-growing landscape on the Lower Main with a historic town center and routes to Engelberg. Bischofsberg, the half-timbered town hall, ecclesiastical architectural history and hiking trails each add a distinct touch. The Main River is also part of the town’s character: at river kilometer 120.8, there is a landing stage for river hikers. The area thus offers everything from winegrowing and local history to hiking and river activities.

Winegrowing on Bischofsberg

Großheubach’s Bischofsberg is a climatically favorable vineyard site on the Lower Main, with around 50 hectares of vines. Orchards break up the vineyards and give the wine-growing area its own distinctive landscape character. Since 1989, Bischofsberg has had a wine trail created by the Großheubach winegrowers’ association. The vineyard site and trail make winegrowing a central theme for exploring the town.

Häckerwirtschaften—seasonal wine taverns—are also part of Großheubach’s wine culture. Wine tastings are offered there, and wines are also sold directly by producers through private sales. Those interested in regional wines can therefore explore not only the wine trail but also the local traditions of hospitality and wine sales.

Old Town and Architectural History

The historic town hall was built in 1611/1612 in the traditional Franconian half-timbered style. It served as the seat of a deputy bailiff for the Prozelten administrative district and is now the entrance to Großheubach’s historic old-town area. The building thus combines a specific historical function with its present-day role in the townscape.

The Abendanz House also has a place in the history of the wine trade: in the 18th century, it was a branch office of an important Franconian wine merchant. The Catholic parish church of St. Peter acquired its present appearance between 1895 and 1897. The town hall, Abendanz House and church represent different chapters in the town’s history and architecture.

Engelberg: The Stairway and Hike

A monastery was built on Engelberg in 1630 after the number of pilgrims had increased. The historic route from Großheubach leads up 612 stone steps known as the Engelsstaffeln. Six wayside chapels featuring scenes from the Passion and Stations of the Cross line the ascent. The route is defined not only by its steps but also by its religious stations.

An alternative hike to Engelberg leads from Großheubach through vineyards and forests between Großheubach and Miltenberg. The two routes described differ in their character: one is a historic ascent up steps, with chapels and Stations of the Cross; the other is a hike through vineyards and forest.

Hiking Trails and the Main River

The Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail passes through Großwallstadt, Obernburg, Elsenfeld, Rück, Erlenbach, Klingenberg, Großheubach, Miltenberg and Bürgstadt. The Eselsweg, a long-distance trail of more than 111 kilometers, runs from Schlüchtern or Bad Orb via Großheubach to other towns. The Großheubach 1 cultural trail, “Von Hecke zu Häcke in Hebboch,” leads through the forests of Busigberg and Nebelkappe. You’ll encounter different types of trails: a regional wine trail, a long-distance hiking trail and a cultural trail through two forest areas.

On the Main in Großheubach, at river kilometer 120.8, there is a landing stage for river hikers marked with the “Yellow Wave” sign. Hikers can choose from the trails described according to their routes; the landing stage is a separate point of interest for river hikers.
