Zolling combines a distinctive cultural landmark with opportunities to explore the countryside: the parish church of St. John the Baptist showcases late Gothic architecture, while the Amper Valley offers a different focus with hiking trails and natural waters. When planning your trip, you can choose between culture and time outdoors.

Church, Amper Valley and water

The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist in Zolling is a late Gothic building dating from the second half of the 15th century, around 1450. Its historical significance makes it a specific point of interest for anyone who wants to explore architectural history alongside nature.

In the municipality of Zolling, the Amper Valley offers numerous hiking trails and natural waters. Those who enjoy walking will find a scenic counterpoint here to a visit to the parish church. The trails and waters add a connection with nature to your stay, without requiring a visit to any one particular viewpoint.

Freising’s history and art

Freising’s historic old town is centred on Marienplatz, around which burghers’ and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic to the Baroque period are clustered. A Marian column dating from 1674 also stands there. On Freising Cathedral Hill, Freising Cathedral has a crypt and the Beast Column. The Freising City Museum displays around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history.

For art outdoors, the Weihenstephan Art Trail crosses the campus, passing almost 30 contemporary works by regionally and internationally recognised artists. It consists of two circular routes, each taking a little over an hour. The Freising Forest Experience Trail offers a different focus: this approximately two-kilometre circular route in the Freising Forest has 23 stations with display boards, information and play activities. You can choose between works of art on campus and a trail featuring nature-themed information and stations.

The Schafhof in Freising is a centre for contemporary art in Upper Bavaria and hosts year-round exhibitions of works by international and local artists. The annual Johannismarkt and Advent market are also held there, where selected arts and craftspeople present high-quality one-of-a-kind pieces.

Gardens and brewing culture

The Weihenstephan Gardens are located on the grounds of a former Benedictine monastery and are maintained by Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences. The five-hectare trial garden for perennials and woody plants assesses perennials, woody plants and new rose varieties for their practical value. Existing flower beds and plantings are currently being renewed. A viewing terrace in the courtyard garden offers views of the Alpine panorama.

The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan includes a small brewery museum and the adjoining BraustĂĽberl Weihenstephan restaurant. The brewery offers tours and is the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world. The wider Freising destination thus spans historic buildings and art, as well as gardens and brewing culture.
