Alfeld combines a long history with routes that bring history and landscape to life in tangible ways. The Protestant Church of St. Bartholomew was consecrated in 1072, providing an early historical landmark. The signposted Alfeld boundary walk offers another way to explore the town’s history: the 1.5 km circular route passes through Alfeld and has six stops.

Local History on the Boundary Walk

At the starting point, an audio device made by Stefan Stock from Kastl plays four MP3 recordings about local history, songs and customs. You can walk the boundary route alone or in a group; the Alfeld cultural association offers guided tours on request. The stops and audio recordings offer different ways to explore the walk’s themes. This lets you discover local history not just at one point, but along the route.

Nature Trail and Landscape

The Rinntal nature trail offers a different focus. It is about 2 km long, and the walk takes approximately two hours. The trail runs through a valley that has no roads and is of geological and botanical interest. You can take the length and approximate walking time into account when planning your day; the valley itself is what makes the route a nature experience. The Kneipp pool in Alfeld is between the playground and the start of the Rinntal nature trail.

The Alfelder Windloch natural monument lies near Nonnhof. The dolomite cave is 2.2 km long and the second-longest known dolomite cave in the Franconian Jura. The Rinntal nature reserve near Alfeld is another distinct landscape feature: as of 31 December 2025, it is listed as covering 32.82 hectares.
