Reichenschwand: Pegnitz Valley and Castle History
Accommodation in Reichenschwand
Reichenschwand lies in the broad Pegnitz Valley; the municipality also includes the districts of Oberndorf and Leuzenberg. The medieval town centre extends about 400 metres from north to south, right up to the Pegnitz. The town's history and riverside landscape give it a distinctive character. Your trip can take in several different themes: castle history, a special chair collection and activities at the sports grounds.
Castle history on the banks of the Pegnitz
The so-called Second Furtenbach Castle is in the medieval town centre. In 1832, Stansky had Reichenschwand Castle remodelled; it is the only castle in the NĂĽrnberger Land to have been preserved in the Neo-Gothic style. On the opposite bank of the Pegnitz, in the old town, lies the site of the former moated castle of the Lords of Strahlenfels. The town's history thus brings together different historical landmarks: a surviving castle and the site of a former moated castle.
A collection of more than 1,300 chairs
The SAMMLUNG WERNER LÖFFLER offers a very different attraction. It brings together more than 1,300 unique, authentic chairs spanning three centuries; Werner Löffler has been assembling the collection since 1987. Its broad historical range makes it a special cultural destination in Reichenschwand. Visits are possible by appointment. If you would like to include the collection in your plans, arrange your visit in advance.
Tour and castle connections
The Pegnitz Terraces Tour starts in Reichenschwand and, after crossing the B14, passes an oak grove belonging to Reichenschwand Castle. The route thus connects its starting point in town with a specific feature of the castle landscape. If you are planning the tour, check the trail conditions beforehand.
Reichenschwand Castle is part of the Dormero SchloĂźhotel Reichenschwand and can be rented for all kinds of celebrations. If you are considering holding an event there, confirm the details directly with the venue.
Activities in different seasons
There is a large skating area with various ramps at the Am Anger sports grounds. In winter, the skating area can be used for ice skating. The season therefore makes a practical difference when planning: as well as skateboarding, ice skating is also possible in winter. Check the conditions on site before your visit.
More things to do in the NĂĽrnberger Land
You can include other excursion ideas in your plans across the wider Nürnberger Land destination. More than 3,000 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails and well-maintained cycling routes of varying difficulty run through the Nürnberger Land. One specific hiking option is the “Hohenstein (634 m) – SevenSummits” route in Kirchensittenbach: it is 10.1 kilometres long, with 406 metres of ascent and 397 metres of descent. The distance and elevation gain give you a basis for deciding whether to include this tour in your trip; check the trail conditions before setting out.
For a different kind of outing, the Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck offers relaxation in officially recognised therapeutic water and a sauna area with seven saunas. The thermal spa is accessible. Lifts lead to the foyer and spa world, and from there to the sports and leisure pool and sauna park. The German Shepherd Museum in Hersbruck adds a cultural dimension: it displays clothing, equipment and handicrafts made by shepherds from around the world. The NĂĽrnberger Land therefore offers a range of ways to include nature, activity and culture in your trip.
