Nuremberg Land: Gorges, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Nuremberg Land
In Nuremberg Land, striking landscapes meet hiking and cycling trails, water, thermal baths and museum culture. The Bitterbach Gorge, shady forests, and the river and lake scenery each offer something different. Hersbruck also has an accessible thermal spa and a museum featuring shepherds’ clothing and handicrafts from around the world. If you’re planning a trip with a range of interests, it helps to decide first what you’d like to focus on: hiking, distinctive landscapes, water sports, relaxation or a museum visit. You can then look for accommodation near the places that matter to your travel plans.
Hiking trails and specific routes
More than 3,000 kilometers of clearly marked hiking trails and well-maintained cycling routes of varying difficulty run through Nuremberg Land. There’s plenty to choose from across the region, but when planning, the profile of each individual route matters most. Check the details for your specific route before setting out.
One route with precise figures is “Hohenstein (634 m) – SevenSummits” in Kirchensittenbach: it is 10.1 kilometers long, with 406 meters of elevation gain and 397 meters of descent. The separate ascent and descent figures add to the route length and give a more detailed picture of its elevation profile. The “Hochberg (619 m) – SevenSummits” route has a different focus: it passes through the forests around Pommelsbrunn, with the “Acropolis of the Celts” on Hochberg as its highlight. Whereas the first route stands out for its length and elevation figures, the second is defined by its forest route and named destination.
Gorge, forest and nature park
In the Bitterbach Gorge near Lauf an der Pegnitz, steep gorge walls, some undercut by water, alternate with rocks overgrown with mosses and ferns. Deep fissures and holes, as well as small waterfalls, are also part of the landscape. The Franconian Dune Trail has a different focus: its route passes through sandstone gorges, by sand dunes and through shady forests. These descriptions show how varied the natural scenery can be, without implying that all the routes share one uniform character.
The Wengleinpark, a nature reserve founded by Carl Wenglein in 1930, is in Pommelsbrunn. Nuremberg Land is also part of the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park. Together with the trails and landscapes described above, these places offer a starting point for anyone planning a trip focused primarily on experiencing nature.
Thermal spa, museum and water
The Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck offers two more highlights: relaxation in officially recognized therapeutic water and a sauna area with seven saunas. The spa is accessible. Elevators connect the foyer to the thermal spa area, and from there to the sports and leisure pool and the sauna park. If you’re planning to visit the spa, check the latest visitor information before your visit.
At the German Shepherds’ Museum in Hersbruck, you can see clothing, equipment and handicrafts made by shepherds from around the world. A museum visit adds a cultural dimension to the trails and natural sites. The local cuisine also has a direct connection to the landscape: local breweries serve beer brewed with hops from Nuremberg Land. These hops are part of the “Hersbrucker Gebirg,” one of the oldest designated hop-growing districts.
The Pegnitz River and lakes in Nuremberg Land invite visitors to enjoy water sports. The options therefore range from hiking and cycling trails to a thermal spa and museum, as well as activities on the water. If you’d like to combine several of these, include the relevant locations in your plans rather than assuming all the experiences are in one place.
