Discover Achslach: Hiking Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Achslach
Explore Achslach by choosing from specific trail options: from the marked 3 km Kirchberg Circuit to longer routes via Hirschenstein or to Kalteck. The Oed Birch Bog Forest nature reserve, located north of Achslach, adds a distinctive landscape. St. James’ Parish Church also offers a cultural point of interest. These differences provide a starting point when choosing accommodation: the key is which hiking destinations and landscape impressions you would like to include in your plans.
Hiking trails with different routes
Marked circular hiking trail No. 1 runs via Rimbeck, Bernwinkel, Zottling, Hofpoint, Kager and Aign before returning to Achslach. It is 12 km long and has an elevation gain of 200 m. Main hiking trail No. 1 runs from Achslach via Vogelsang, Tafertsried, Bergheim, Hochweid, Klosterstein and Regensburger Stein to Kalteck; it is 10 km long and has an elevation gain of 430 m. This means the 12 km circular trail can be compared with the 10 km route, which has the greater elevation gain. Trail conditions on both No. 1 routes may change; check the current situation before setting out.
For a shorter walk, marked hiking trail No. 3 loops around Kirchberg in Achslach, with a detour to the Mariengrotte. The route is 3 km long and has an elevation gain of 70 m. A second marked route numbered 3, however, runs from Achslach via Hienhardt and Grün to Kalteck. It is 5 km long and has an elevation gain of 200 m. The same trail number therefore refers to two different routes: a Kirchberg loop and a route to Kalteck.
Number 4 also refers to two trails. The marked trail from Achslach via Lindenau, Hirschenstein, Ödwies and Oed returns to Achslach; it is 15 km long and has an elevation gain of 500 m. The marked “Höhenluft” route runs from Achslach via Rimbeck and Zeitlhof. At 4 km long with an elevation gain of 100 m, it is the shorter of the two No. 4 routes. The stated distances and elevation gains offer concrete points of comparison when weighing the routes for your plans.
Nature and culture around Achslach
The Oed Birch Bog Forest nature reserve lies north of Achslach. In addition to bog forests, it contains raised-bog, transition-bog and fen communities, as well as alder swamp forests. This combination of bog and wet woodland habitats makes the landscape a distinctive natural attraction alongside the hiking routes. From the road, there is a view of the eastern part of the area, with its open birch bog forests.
St. James’ Parish Church in Achslach houses the reliquary shrine of St. Hilarius; the church tower dates from the 15th century. The shrine and tower offer distinct historical points of interest: the reliquary shrine is associated with St. Hilarius, while the tower’s date provides a reference to the 15th century. This specific church feature complements the hiking trails and natural landscape.
