Königsberg i.Bay. combines a historic old town with a striking castle ruin and direct access to a cycle path. When planning a trip with children, specific themes can help bring everyone into the planning process: local history, arts and crafts, astronomy and nature each offer a different focus. This makes it easier to consider which discoveries should be at the heart of your stay.

An old town rich in history and distinctive features

The entire historic old town of Königsberg is protected as a heritage site. Its market square dates back to the 15th century and continues to shape the character of the old town. The town hall is a local landmark; its features include a statue of Roland and a carillon. St. Mary’s Church also makes its own architectural statement: it is a Gothic parish church with a 46-metre-high tower.

These specific details offer different starting points for exploring together with children: the statue of Roland and carillon at the town hall, and the Gothic architecture and tower height at the church. The old town as a whole is protected as a heritage site; the town hall and church also each offer their own perspective on Königsberg.

Castle ruins, exhibition and crafts

Königsberg Imperial Castle is now an impressive castle ruin with well-maintained walls and a popular destination for day trips. From there, the view stretches across Königsberg and the Main Valley as far as the Rhön. The “On Historic Paths around Königsberg” experience trail starts in the historic market square.

The Regiomontanus exhibition offers a different way to explore culture. It is devoted to the mathematician and astronomer Johannes Müller, known as Regiomontanus. Artists and craftspeople work at the artisans’ courtyard in the Old Königsberg Brewery, where they present and display their work. Astronomy, crafted art and local history thus stand side by side as different themes.

Cycle path and nature destinations

Königsberg is directly connected to the car-free cycle path along the former railway line between Haßfurt and Hofheim. Those who want to include some activity in their trip planning will find a direct link to cycling here. The Queckbrünnlein spring is another natural attraction: its restored historic spring enclosure has a Kneipp pool. At the end of an experience trail lies the Urwiese, a protected nutrient-poor meadow with especially high biodiversity.

The wider Haßberge region

The broader travel destination of Haßberge opens up a gently rolling low-mountain landscape. The Haßberge Nature Park is characterized by extensive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and varied scenery. Its experience trails are designed as half-day or full-day routes and loop back to their starting points. For a longer route, the 190-kilometre Castles and Palaces Hiking Trail leads through the German Castle Corner.

The Amtsbotenweg crosses the Haßberge ridge from Altenstein to Königsberg. Another regional highlight is the Schwedenschanze observation tower, perched on a 487-metre-high hill on the Haßberge ridge. From there, the view extends over mixed forest towards the Grabfeld, as well as to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and Thuringia in the north. The trails and landscapes in the wider Haßberge travel destination therefore offer their own points of interest alongside Königsberg’s historic attractions.

Both perspectives offer different ways to plan a trip around your own interests.
