Oberhaid combines a nature reserve and a teaching garden with trails for exercise, historic cellars, churches and mills. This offers several ways to shape your stay: nature and wildlife, local history, culture or cycling. When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide first which of these sides of Oberhaid you want your trip to focus on.

Nature, gardens and trails

The Seelaub nature reserve is notable for its unspoilt character. For a curated view of plants, visit the Oberhaid District Teaching Garden: Covering 1,200 m², it features medicinal plants, historic crop and dye plants, bee-friendly flowering plants, an orchard meadow and wild shrubs. The Nordic walking trail, with three levels of difficulty, is at the northern edge of the village.

The four-kilometre Bat Trail starts at the cellar lane. Seven stops provide information about native bat species. Its focus is therefore on information along the route, while the Nordic walking trail offers three levels of difficulty. Check local conditions before setting out.

Cellar complex and seasonal insights

The historic cellar complex in Unterhaid dates back to the 18th century and comprises 29 individual private cellars and a summer cellar. Nature is also part of its history: During the cold season, one of the rock cellars serves as a winter roost for endangered bat species. From May to September, groups can learn about the lives of nocturnal animals and other inhabitants of the former beer cellar, as well as the geological layers of the hill. Arrange visits in advance.

In the summer months, when the weather is fine, visitors can enjoy beer and a Franconian snack at the cellar complex.

Mills, churches and local history

The KunstMühle combines historic charm with modern spaces for workshops, exhibitions and community engagement. The programme may vary. It is distinct from the Alte Mühle, dating from 1670, which underwent extensive renovation from 2017 onwards. Together with the open mill stream, a small café and the newly redesigned village square, it offers places to spend time.

The churches and chapels also give local history its distinct character. St. Bartholomäus Parish Church is the destination of the annual Oberhaid pilgrimage; the date varies from year to year. In Staffelbach, the listed Roman Catholic branch church of St. Cyriakus has a Gothic choir tower dating from the 14th century. Mater Dolorosa Cemetery Chapel is also one of Oberhaid’s sights.

Cycling and Franconian fare

For a longer cycling option, try the easy Rennweg EXTRA Tour 1: The 30.8-kilometre route runs from Oberhaid via Schönbrunn and Gleisenau Castle through the Main river meadows and back to Oberhaid. Compared with the four-kilometre Bat Trail, the two options differ considerably in length and type of activity. It is worth checking the current route before setting off.

The Oberhaid municipality includes the Staffelbacher Spitzelberg and Unterhaider Röthla wine-growing areas. Typical Franconian dishes and snacks are also available.

In the wider Bamberg destination

In the wider Bamberg destination, Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden offers a distinctive perspective on Baroque architecture: It is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes and houses an extensive gallery featuring works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In Ebrach, the monastery complex was extensively remodelled into a palace-like Baroque ensemble in the 18th century by Leonhard Dientzenhofer; the Gothic church and its rose window were preserved. The Museum of Ebrach’s History has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery since 2004 and explores the history of the market town and the monastery.
