Discover Oberscheinfeld
Accommodation in Oberscheinfeld
Oberscheinfeld lies in the wooded natural landscape of the Steigerwald Nature Park. Here, hiking and cycling opportunities meet striking reminders of the town’s history: the Scharfeneck Castle ruins, the parish church of St. Gallus and almost 20 wayside shrines, most of which have been restored. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors while also taking time to notice historical details will find a variety of ways to spend their stay here.
Hiking trails and views in the Steigerwald
In the Schwarzenberger Land tourist area, Oberscheinfeld offers relaxation as well as opportunities for hiking and cycling. Marked circular trails start at the town hall, where there is a large information board, and each one returns to its starting point. This gives your route planning a clear reference point, without every trail having to follow the same route.
The Steigerwald Circuit to the Scharfeneck Castle ruins follows a natural path along the Prühlbach, between meadows and woodland. Old beeches and oaks grow in the Schöner Buchschlag woodland. The stream, open meadows and stretches of woodland together shape the character of this route. Those who would like to take in the landscape from a higher vantage point will find a tower at the Scharfeneck Castle ruins that is used as an observation tower, with views across this part of the Steigerwald. The keep ends in an observation platform.
History in the tower, altar and wayside shrines
The parish church of St. Gallus also reveals several layers of history. Its choir tower, with its Gothic vault, probably dates back to the first half of the 15th century. The Baroque high altar contains a Late Gothic stone mensa with a reliquary capsule and a consecration document from 1691. The tower’s architecture and the altar’s furnishings thus tell the church’s long history of construction and use in different ways.
Almost 20 wayside shrines are scattered throughout Oberscheinfeld; most have been restored. Together with the church and the castle ruins, they make the local cultural heritage a visible presence, offering a distinctly different experience from a day spent hiking alone. Inns in Oberscheinfeld and its districts also invite you to enjoy Franconian specialities.
A wider look at Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim
The wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim offers further distinct experiences. A visit to the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim is considered a journey through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. The Bauhofstadel there was built between 1441 and 1444; its late medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supports. For cyclists, the almost 100-kilometre long-distance cycle route “From the Main to the Zenn” runs through the district of Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim, connecting Kitzingen with Fürth. It offers a different scale from the local circular trails in Oberscheinfeld.
Regional cuisine offers its own highlights: Aischgrund mirror carp is one of the local specialities in Neustadt an der Aisch and is served from September to April, for example, fried until crisp or prepared blue in broth. The Aischgrund Carp Lovers’ Weeks take place every year from 1 September to 1 November at selected restaurants in the district. Check which restaurants are currently taking part before you travel.
