Holzkirchen: Geo Trail, Culture and Water
Accommodation in Holzkirchen
Holzkirchen combines exploring the landscape with culture and water-based activities. The Geo Trail takes visitors past geological features, KULTUR im Oberbräu brings together several disciplines under one roof, and BATUSA offers a range of pools. Which of these appeals to you most may also shape your choice of accommodation and how you plan your stay.
Geology on two circular routes
The newly established Holzkirchen Geo Trail (GLH) has 24 stations along two circular routes. The 16-kilometre northern route starts and ends at Holzkirchen railway station. The southern route is 19 kilometres long and starts and ends at Herdergarten. For planning your day, you can first distinguish between the two routes by their length.
The stations explore glacial geomorphological phenomena in the Holzkirchen area: the trail explains the retreat stages of the terminal moraines, former meltwater channels and the formation of the Teufelsgraben. This means the focus is not only on the routes themselves, but also on the geological features covered by the information boards.
Other ways to explore Holzkirchen on foot or by bike complement the circular routes. Visitor activities include a walk along the Teufelsgraben and a short stroll along Steindlweg. Cycle paths lead from the lively market square into the surrounding countryside in less than five minutes. A bike ride to Hackensee is also one of the options.
Water, stage and cinema
BATUSA Holzkirchen has a swimming pool 12.5 metres wide and 25 metres long, a large water slide, a heated outdoor pool and a children’s paddling pool. In summer, there is also a large sunbathing lawn. Together, these offer a variety of aquatic areas and a seasonal opportunity to spend time outdoors.
KULTUR im Oberbräu brings together theatre, literature, cabaret, music, concerts, cinema, exhibitions, food and drink, and other activities. FoolsKino has 73 comfortable seats and screens a selection of films that has won several awards. FoolsTheater can accommodate events for up to 130 spectators. The foyer is open to artists from the region for exhibitions, while the rehearsal room offers a range of participatory courses for all ages. The programme therefore spans everything from films and events to exhibitions and hands-on participation.
Colourful markets are also held in Holzkirchen several times a year. When planning your stay, the connection to Munich may be another consideration alongside the local activities: from Holzkirchen, you can reach central Munich by S-Bahn or Bayerische Oberlandbahn in about 30 minutes.
A distinct cultural offering in Miesbach

The Waitzinger Keller cultural centre hosts operas, operettas, musicals, cabaret, concerts, children’s events, traditional events and exhibitions throughout the year. With a core collection of more than 3,000 objects, the Miesbach Local History Museum explores the natural and cultural landscape of the Oberland region.
The Local History Museum’s collection includes examples of Miesbach furniture painting and religious folk art from the era of pilgrimages to Miesbach. There are also tools and equipment from guilds and crafts, as well as a farmhouse parlour, a cobbler’s workshop and a hatmaker’s workshop. These collections add a distinctive focus alongside the offerings in Holzkirchen and give visitors to the wider Miesbach travel destination an additional cultural perspective.
