Rahnsdorf: Village History and Waterways
Accommodation in Rahnsdorf
Rahnsdorf combines a protected village heritage with experiences along the stream, lake and canals. The entire village street and village green are now protected historic sites; the old fishing village of Rahnsdorf is also protected. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: architectural and commemorative history, a hike or experiences on the water. If you are looking for accommodation, first consider which of these themes you would most like to focus on during your trip.
Village History and Buildings
Rahnsdorf Village Church was rebuilt between 1886 and 1888 on the ruins of its predecessor, which was destroyed by fire. On the church square in Rahnsdorf stands the sandstone relief “The Evil Cloud” by Ingeborg Hunzinger, created in 1999. It commemorates the fishermen of Rahnsdorf and adds a distinct note alongside the area’s architectural history.
The forest chapel in Hessenwinkel is a listed building. It was built in 1910 by the Jürgensen & Bachmann architectural firm. The Müggelsee lido in Rahnsdorf, at Fürstenwalder Damm 838, comprises a terrace building, an entrance hall and a gatekeeper’s residence. It was built in 1929–1930 by Martin Wagner and Hennings. The different buildings and the periods in which they were built offer several ways to explore local history.
Walks, the Lake and Canals
In the protected Müggelsee and Fredersdorfer Mühlenfließ area, you can walk along the stream from Waldschänke Rahnsdorf to where it flows into Müggelsee. At sunset, the pier offers a romantic view across the vast expanse of the lake. The stream and the open lake view offer two distinct ways to enjoy nature.
In the Neu-Venedig area, the MĂĽggelspree branches out into five canals. You can explore them by canoe, on a SUP or in a small motorboat. This lets you experience the waterscape from the water, with the three options differing mainly in the type of watercraft.
On Foot, by Bike or by Ferry
For a hike, the SO03 circular route from Friedrichshagen to Rahnsdorf is one specific option: it is about eight kilometres long and takes approximately 2.5 hours. Check the trail conditions before setting out. The estimated time will help you plan this hike as a longer activity in its own right.
The seasonal F23 ferry connects MĂĽggelwerderweg with Kruggasse in Rahnsdorf via MĂĽggelhort and Neu Helgoland. It can be part of a cycling loop around MĂĽggelsee. As the service is seasonal, it is best to check the timetable before planning your trip. The F24 ferry crossing takes about five minutes and can be used with a valid short-distance ticket. From Rahnsdorf S-Bahn station, you can reach its Kruggasse landing stage on bus route 161; GrĂĽnheider Weg is the closest bus stop to the landing stage. It is also helpful to check the timetable in advance for this journey.
Berlin as a Wider Travel Destination
In the wider destination of Berlin, the major parks also offer their own attractions for outings. Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest and most visited inner-city park, ideal for walking, outdoor activities and picnics. Tempelhofer Feld is a large public park where people picnic, sunbathe and play sports. These park examples broaden the picture of Berlin, while Rahnsdorf’s themes range from village history to streams, lakes and canals.
