Sagritz combines its history on the Dahme with a watermill that is still powered by the river today. In the museum room at the Kanow Mill, visitors can also observe traditional oil production. The history of the former manor estate, visible parts of a park and handcrafted soaps also shape the town. Sagritz brings together a range of interests for visitors: hydropower and mill history, the manor estate and local crafts.

The Kanow Mill on the Dahme

The historic Kanow Mill lies right on the Dahme. A mill has stood here since at least the 16th century; it was first mentioned in a document in 1527. It has been family-owned since 1815. The fact that the waters of the Dahme still power the mill today connects its long history with its current function as a watermill.

The museum room offers a direct view into the production area: visitors can watch the oil miller at work through a glass pane. The mill produces edible oils using traditional artisanal methods, rather than the processes used by industrial oil mills. Those interested in how the oil is made can therefore see not just the finished product, but also follow the steps involved.

From April to October, an official guided tour of the historic mill takes place on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. It offers insights into the mill’s history and traditional oil production; an oil tasting is also included. The seasonal schedule may change. So, if you plan to join the tour, check the current schedule before your visit.

Manor estate history and soap-making

The Sagritz manor estate offers a different historical perspective. It is a former knight’s estate belonging to the von Kleist family; Count Eduard von Kleist had the manor complex built in 1840. Thanks to the old trees, parts of the park are still clearly recognizable. Here, local history is reflected in the estate and its landscape, while at the Kanow Mill the focus is on hydropower and oil production.

Contemporary crafts in Sagritz include the Gut Sagritz soap workshop, which makes small batches of soap by hand. The estate’s soaps are made using only goat’s milk from certified organic farming, pure vegetable oils, non-hydrogenated vegetable fats and natural essential oils for fragrance. The production process combines small-scale batches and handcraft with a precisely defined selection of ingredients.

By comparing the history of the mill with that of the manor estate and soap-making, visitors can find a range of topics to inform their travel plans without reducing Sagritz to a single attraction. At the mill, the historical use of hydropower and oil production take center stage; the manor estate adds a park and soap-making to the town’s history.

Cycle routes and practical planning

Cyclists can also use the Kanow Mill as a point of reference: the Gurkenradweg cycle route passes right by it. The DahmeRadweg also passes the mill along the DahmeMühlenweg and continues through Sagritz. This provides route-planning information both about the connection to the mill and, for the DahmeRadweg, its further route through the town.

The manor estate has four touring bikes with low step-through frames for day trips. They are primarily lent to guests staying at the property. If you would like to include these bikes in your plans, ask before your trip whether they will be available to borrow during your stay. This lets you consider a bike ride as a separate part of your trip planning, alongside other highlights such as the guided tour, oil production and the history of the manor estate.
