Discover Falkensee: Memorials, Lakes and Cycling Trails
Accommodation in Falkensee
Falkensee combines places of remembrance and local history with lakes, circular trails and cycling routes. Experiences range from an open-air exhibition to art and literature, as well as a waterside playground. Cycling also offers a variety of options: some routes pass through Falkensee, while others connect the town with nearby destinations.
Remembrance, Local History and Art
The Falkensee History Park features an open-air exhibition on the history of the former Falkensee subcamp of the concentration camp. It is also a memorial to the victims of National Socialism. An audio walk developed by students from Humboldt University of Berlin in cooperation with the Falkensee Museum and Gallery explores the history of the camp, forced labour in Falkensee and the creation of the History Park.
Several themes come together in the permanent exhibition at the Falkensee Museum and Gallery: it links the natural environment and wildlife of the Havelland, archaeology and Falkensee’s local history with the life and work of poet Gertrud Kolmar (1894–1943). This gives the town’s history a literary connection while also placing Falkensee in a broader regional context.
The museum and gallery also include a contemporary art gallery, rooms for special exhibitions and displays from their own collection, as well as the Gertrud Kolmar Rose Garden. Falkenhagener Anger adds a historic village layout to these cultural attractions: this notable village green is protected as an urban-design gem under a preservation statute.
Lakes, Circular Trail and Playground
Falkenhagener See and Neuer See are destinations for outings in Falkensee. At Neuer See, you can walk around the lake on a circular hiking trail in any weather. The trail offers a clear route for anyone who wants to spend time outdoors on a walk without planning a cycling tour.
There is a playground by Falkenhagener See and Neuer See, with a sunken ship, a mud play area and a nest swing. These features make it especially appealing to families. The playground offers a different focus from the circular trail: here, play takes centre stage, while the trail around Neuer See makes it possible to take a walk by the water.
Cycling Routes with Different Themes
The approximately 8-kilometre “Radweg der Sympathie” connects Falkensee with Brieselang and Berlin’s Spandau district. It passes through woodland, green corridors, meadows, ditches and quiet residential areas. Along the way, it runs through the History Park, past the landscaped park of the former Seegefeld manor and later through Bredower Forst Nature Reserve. The route thus links a variety of landscapes with places associated with Falkensee’s history.
The Berlin Wall Trail crosses Falkensee near Falkenhagener See, passes through Bürgermeistergarten towards Spandauer Forst and returns to the Berlin side at Pestalozzistraße or Maikäferweg. In Bürgermeistergarten, the permanent exhibition “Spurensuche: Mauer” (“Tracing the Wall”) tells the story of the wall that separated Falkensee from Spandau. Those interested in the history of the division will find a specific topic to explore along the route.
Allow a full day for the cycling tour “Auf den Pfaden der Alten Hamburger Poststraße” (“Along the Paths of the Old Hamburg Post Road”); it starts at Falkensee regional railway station. Another route is the tour “Kleingewässer, Feuchtbiotope – Erholung vor der Haustür” (“Small Bodies of Water, Wetlands – Recreation on Your Doorstep”): it also starts at the station, passes through the centre and continues to Kantstraße, where it offers views of Falkenhagener See and Neuer See.
The cycle route from Falkensee to Döberitzer Heide also starts at the regional railway station. The route described follows Potsdamer Straße, Schwartzkopffstraße, Coburger Straße, Döberitzer Straße, Nachtigallstraße and Gartenstraße towards Dallgow-Döberitz. Another cycling tour to the nature trail in Bredower Forst starts at Falkensee regional railway station; the nature trail is in the area between Falkensee and Brieselang. These destinations offer a different orientation from routes whose described course runs through Falkensee itself.
