Spremberg lies in the green valley of the Spree and at the heart of Lusatia. Here, the natural Spree floodplain, green trails and a history dating back to the 11th century come together. This gives you a range of options when planning your visit: nature watching and walking trails, views from the city park, or culture in the historic centre.

Spree floodplain and green trails

The small Slamener Kuthen nature park preserves a section of the natural Spree floodplain and is part of the Slamer Heide landscape conservation area. Numerous plant and animal species listed on the Red List can be found in the Kuthen primeval forest. The landscape is not only a green setting for a stay, but also a place with a special connection to nature.

The completed part of NABU’s plan for the nature park includes the Natur-Erlebnis-Energie hiking trail and a short trail through the Kuthen primeval forest. These two trails give Spremberg’s natural side a tangible focus: when planning your visit, you can choose whether you are more interested in the designated Natur-Erlebnis-Energie trail or the short trail through the Kuthen primeval forest.

City park, views and history

Trails and prominent landmarks also come together in Spremberg City Park. The Bismarck Tower has two viewing platforms overlooking the town in the Spree Valley. If you are interested in longer hiking routes, the European long-distance path E10 offers another perspective: it runs through the city park past the fountain, the Lapidarium and Sängerblick.

The town’s history reaches back to the origins of the present-day castle site. A tower castle in the early German style was built here as early as the 11th century to protect the crossing of the Spree. In the town centre, well-maintained townhouses, shops, cafés and restaurants line the narrow lanes around the market square. The Sonntagsches Haus is considered the oldest residential building in Spremberg.

Museum, market and guided tours

The Niederlausitz Heath Museum is located in Spremberg Castle. Its exhibitions focus on the history of the region and include documents about the life and work of the writer Erwin Strittmatter, who was born in Spremberg. The museum is largely accessible: visitors with limited mobility and parents with pushchairs can enter the building from the courtyard without using steps. An easily accessible lift serves all exhibition levels.

If you would like to get to know the town on a guided tour, you can book directly with the town guides. A bookable historical tour presents the story of Jutta von Kittlitz and Seyfried von Loeben in a portrayal of the late 11th century. The weekly market offers a different glimpse into everyday town life: it takes place twice a week and offers fresh produce as well as an opportunity to connect with the local community. Market dates may change, so check the current schedule before your visit.

Spree-Neiße as a wider travel region

The wider Spree-Neiße destination offers another perspective along the Spree Cycle Route: it crosses the region for about 60 kilometres, mostly along paved river dikes. The East German Rose Garden in Forst (Lausitz) is also part of the wider Spree-Neiße destination. This 17-hectare park offers visitors tens of thousands of roses in almost 1,000 varieties. These regional highlights complement the nature and culture you can discover in Spremberg itself.

When looking for accommodation in Spremberg, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: city history and the museum, trails and nature in Slamener Kuthen, or the sights of the city park. You can then tailor your search to the experiences you would most like to discover first.
